Oh Brother Who Are Thou? (2020)
This movie has no flaws
I can't even imagine how they pitched this movie. "I want to make a retelling of the Odyssey, set in the late 1800s south, starring 3 convicts, with no real point" lol. But the movie is perfect in every way. The acting, cinematography, humor, music, storytelling, everything is done flawlessly. It has an all-star cast and just does everything perfectly. It made realize how great of an actor George Clooney is, similar to how I felt about Brad Pitt in Snatch. The music in the movie is absolutely outstanding. 'Constant Sorrow' is now one of my favorite songs, and all of the music is used so well. It's also hilarious. Check it out.
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (2023)
Decent movie that was elevated by the finale.
It's an ok movie. If you have an interest in seeing Transformers' action then check it out. The lead up is solid, not great but not terrible either, but this movie really shines at the end. Watching the Transformers come together and fight is epic, and if you have a good sound system, it's even better. I gave it a 6 but I feel it's between a 6 and a 7. I can also understand why some would rate it higher. I don't know what political stuff other reviewers are complaining about. There wasn't any in the movie, that I saw. The scores of 1-5 are ridiculous imo. If you're a fan of Transformers, I think you'll enjoy it. Cheers.
The Woman King (2022)
This is a really good movie
My family and I really enjoyed this movie. The story is simple enough but it is very well done and elevated because it spends time fleshing out the characters and their relationships. It's funny I see a lot of reviews giving this movie scores that should be reserved for truly terrible movies like Troll 2 and The Room, because it's not historically accurate lol. None of these 'based on a true story' movies have ever been historically accurate, but I don't see them getting bashed for it in the reviews. The movie is good, well paced, has phenomenal performances, and has some really good action scenes (I'm a huge action fan). If the movie I described interests you then give it a shot.
Lightyear (2022)
Very entertaining
This was a very enjoyable watch. The action, humor, heart, and adventure are well done. It ranks up there with the better Pixar movies imo. As a reference, my favorites are The Incredibles and Iron giant.
Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens (2020)
If you want to laugh watch this show
I didn't give this show a chance when it first came out but I was wrong. This show is really funny.
Yasuke (2021)
An homage that stands on its own
How could any anime fan give this a 1,2,or a 3?!! Just for background info, I'm 40 and have been watching anime since I was a kid. My first movie was Akira, after that, Fist of the North Star, Ninja Scroll, Wicked City, Crying Freeman, Golgo, 3x3 Eyes, Vampire Hunter D, and all the classics.
This show gripped me from the first scene. I will say it seems to want to bring in many diverse anime tropes, which may not help it in the end. What it does do is have solid characters, action, and it doesn't have too much drama which I think a lot of modern animes have way too much of. The drama that's there serves to move the story forward and doesn't over stay its welcome.
If you're an anime fan watch the first episode, if you like it, you'll like it.
Flight (2012)
Not a Flight of fancy
A very well made movie about addiction, choice and human weakness. There are a lot of critiques about the technicality of flying but that's not what the movie is about and unless you're a pilot doesn't matter at all. This is a character driven story and is superbly acted by everyone involved, particularly from Denzel and Kelly. Seriously, they deserve Oscars for their performances. I recommend it to any fan of dramas.
Da 5 Bloods (2020)
A masterpiece in character
Before this movie I've only given three 10 ratings: Die Hard, Shawshank, and Malcolm X. This movie is an absolute masterpiece in characterization. It does contain Spike's typical style, so in some places it's more play than movie, in order to explore the characters. It's poignant, layered, deep, and well executed in telling a story of the casualties of war, as they relate to individual perspectives and priorities. The Historical facts presented are true and the movie itself is compelling.
Kuraingu Furiman (1988)
One of the classics
Crying Freeman is part of the anime Hall of Fame to me. It embodies what I think all great anime possess which is a dichotomy between all things. It embodies love and hate, cruelty and kindness, loyalty and duty, and sacrifice vs self service. Plus it is chock full of gratuitous sex and violence. It also features your normal cast of crazy characters that are as ridiculous as they are essential, playing off the stoic and unbeatable lead. If you're a fan of the old classics (Akira, Ninja Scroll, Vampire Hunter D, Wicked City) you will love this series.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
It's a 6
The story makes no sense but it never really has in this trilogy. It's still the most entertaining one of the three.
