About Last Night (2014)
Save your money and rent/wait for it on TV
It was okay, really kind of bland. To paraphrase the supporting actors' words ---"you two are BOOOOORING" when describing the leads. This is why you should pass on seeing this in the theater. They are some funny moments. But the tension in the main characters' relationship makes no sense, there isn't any. No story line or development to the rise and fall of their relationship. This is only worth seeing if you really love and/or are crushing on any of the four actors starring in the movie. That said Kevin Hart and Regina Hall are hilarious, but it's not enough to save this movie. Okay date movie if nothing else is playing. Skip it, you've been warned.
Lars and the Real Girl (2007)
Bring on the Insanity!!!
I wasn't sure what to expect from Lars and the Real Girl, comedy or melodrama. It delivers both, and quite well. Ryan Gosling as the title character is quite funny considering that Lars' mental state is in serious trouble. Emily Mortimer is really warm and compassionate as his sister-in-law who wants him to be happy and feel loved.
Lars is a socially awkward twenty-something who has never had girlfriend and appears to even resist the slightest touch. Lars' brother seems to think everything is okay, but his wife is very troubled by this. He is clueless when his co-worker drops hints that she'd like to go out with him. Rather than ask her out, Lars orders a life-size doll that bares more than a striking resemblance to Angelina Jolie. His brother and sister-in-law are excited to learn about "Bianca." This of course turns into agony and worry about Lars' detachment with reality. His brother's reaction is a mixture of guilt, embarrassment, and uncertainty. Rather than treat Lars for his delusion, his family, co-workers, and soon the whole town goes along with his fantasy. They become as emotionally tied to the doll as Lars is, if not more. She is given clothes, has her hair styled, given community activities; even defended in "arguments" with Lars. It's not long before you wonder who really suffers from delusions. At times, I was waiting for Lars to say, "Enough already! I know she's only a doll!" Yes, it sounds really strange and really sad, but it is neither. It is funny and quite touching at the same time.
