I Am Wrath (2016)
Just What I Needed!
What a perfect Friday early afternoon flick!! I love it when I find a well-done movie where there's a story with twists, with the three-act story conflicts put in just the right places, and where nobody is preaching to me about whatever social issues are the current Big Whine. If I want a preacher, I know where a nice church is. Just give me a movie where the good guys beat up the bad guys (or bad aliens!) The fact Christopher Meloni is in this movie makes it even better than the current fare of B action flicks. IMHO. My advice to folks who don't like is that they should write a better one, get it made and let me know where I can watch it. Thanks.
She Never Died (2019)
I Need A Sequel
Just found out about He Never Died, so I'll hunt that down. When I ran across this on Amazon Prime, I liked the logline. Didn't know who any of the actors were, but I keep an open mind. For about 10 minutes. If the movie can't grab me by then, I close it. This one? Grabbed my attention and never let go. The twists, the questions left hanging (especially the one at the end), the action, the acting...all awesome! I don't like movies that lay it all out for the viewer and this one hit that mark.
The First 48: Missing Persons: In the Wind (2012)
My New Binge
I love these shows!! But...only two seasons? Anyway, on this episode on detective is giving another detective some grief about having gone to college in Mississippi instead of Howard University. He says, "You should have went to Howard..."
Okay.
Do they teach English at Howard? :-) :-) :-)
Possession (2016)
This Should Be A Full Length Movie
Or a trilogy.
I put this on while my wife was getting ready for work. Instead of leaving on time, she left 23 minutes later.
Good job!
When Reid Meadows did The Switch, he nailed it. Both his facial expression and the look in his eyes created an "Oh boy..." moment.
You just knew $#!+ was gonna happen.
I'll let my friends know about this.
Voskhod (2015)
A Very Touching Twilight Zone Type Film
A 28-minute master class in tight character arcs, imaginative plotting and hitting emotional moments. The two actors are excellent artistes. The setting was perfect. And the ending broke my heart.
Torden (2020)
This Is How It Should Be Done
I would also make the same comment about Brightburn. The pacing is sly. It manages to keep your attention and entices you to look just a little bit closer...and then slugs you back into your seat. My wife came home and caught the last ten minutes of it, then watched it again. And again. She wants a sequel. You hear that, André Øvredal?
The Vast of Night (2019)
An Unexpected Pleasure
I used my 'give it 10 minutes' rule on this and stayed for the whole trip. VERY clever dialogue and a plot that kept you guessing up to the end. The two best scenes were Fay's initial stint at the switchboard and Mable's living room interview. Great acting, ladies! My wife is going to LOVE this one.
Anderson Falls (2020)
Great Little Movie
I really like movies like this, very personal stories, a regular guy steps his game up a few notches (cop-to-profiler, and not all cops could do that). There's a scene in the park with Lyn and Shawn that got a jumping fist-pump. They also manage to knock a couple cop movie cliches off the shelf.
Dark Encounter (2019)
It's An Alien Abduction Movie!!! No, it's not. Sort of.
One of the benefits of working from home during the false pandemic is that I get to watch a lot of movies when I have a pile of data correction work (cut&paste after writing HUGE queries to get the stuff). While this movie does not have Oscar-level acting, it did have enough mystery to keep me involved while working right up to The Twist. I have a ten-minute rule for watching anything and, once something keeps me interested past that ten-minute mark, I give it a go.
Glad I did.
Code 8 (2019)
Watched It Twice In One Day
I was a comic book collector. So this is a movie I would naturally want to look at. And just because it's got that vibe, doesn't mean I'll like it. There've been several TV shows and movies in the genre I stopped watching about two minutes into them.
Not this one.
Stephen Amell shook off his Arrow hood with this.
The plot was excellent; the writing noir-ish; the directing tight; and the acting superb.
I give any movie 10 minutes and keep an open mind. The Intern is an example of that. My wife put it on, I thought 'chick-flick'...and I was wrong.
While this movie will not win any major awards, it is what we used to go to the movies for: Pure Entertainment.
I hope Hollywood learns its lesson - we don't want to be preached at.
Just give us something solid that will make us forget our daily troubles for a while and we'll give you money.
I REALLY hope this becomes a series.
The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then the Bigfoot (2018)
Best Movie I've Seen In A Long Time
My wife REALLY wanted to see this movie, so I bought it on Fandango. Wow!! It was not what I expected. It was MUCH better. This is a very touching movie about personal sacrifice that is disguised as a campy action movie. And you DO get your action, but you get to really care about the characters as well. The scene between Sam Elliott's character & the FBI agent is an Oscar-worthy performance by Elliott. But he's the protagonist. And he's a straight, white male. And, even though he shows what true personal sacrifice is, he is not a victim. So it will not even get a nod. But I am recommending it to everyone I know. I have this feeling that my wife will want to see it again. And soon. Me too. Thanks for this gift.
Polar (2019)
10 Minutes
That's a rule my wife & I have. We will give 10 minutes of our time to anything that looks even mildly interesting. So we hit Play and 90 minutes later we were screaming, THERE BETTER BE A DAMN SEQUEL!
The action, acting, stunts & cinematography were all superb!
The reason it's not getting a 10?
They neglected to make it a done-deal that there would be a sequel.
Mads, you're one of the producers.
Make it happen!!
Alientologists (2017)
My God!! What a treasure!!
NO SPOILERS - I can get a little jaded rolling through video after video looking for something worth sharing with my friends. But THIS!!?? This wonderfully happy little piece of joy is going to EVERYBODY!! Thank you so much to everyone involved for making the hunt for video treasures worth the time and effort.
Wind River (2017)
Why Was This Snubbed By The Oscars?
Brilliant writing, excellent directing and amazing acting! This film made my wife and I run through the gamut of emotions that all great films do.
A truly character-driven gem, rare in the theaters these days. No social/political message either, no preaching at the audience. Just a taut and engaging murder mystery that will keep you in your seat.
