Oppenheimer (2023)
Underwhelmed, maybe unfairly so.
OK, full disclosure, I really feel I shoukd be rating this higher that a 7 on the back of other people's reviews, but that's all I feel I can do for now. I might actually re watch soon. Extemely important film, and very good acting all round, I was just looking for something more I think. I beleive the sheer enormity of the subject matter in hand deserved a more dramatic punch for the viewer. I really wanted to leave feeling utterly shocked and conflicted by the film. Maybe it's subtlety is what makes it so good? Just not convinced at the moment. Very much leaning towards an early second viewing.
Goodfellas (1990)
Not really my genre.......
Kept meaning to watch this as it's so highly rated, but just not my thing. Feel a bit of a fraud only giving it a 6. In fairness probably a bit more but couldn't stretch to a 7. Didnt think the acting was anything special nor the story itself. Maybe its age didnt help either.
The Lost City (2022)
Didnt expect much. Got exactly that.
Had low expectations which were perfectly met. The trailer probably covers most of the funny bits. Bang meh film. I'd you really have nothing to do, pop it on. If you really want an easy nothing special adventure film to watch. Jungle cruise is way better imho.
Luca (2021)
A very simple but heartwarming story
This is a very simple story, pretty much staged in one setting but it works so well. Good characters, superb animation and a simple yet moving story of friendship. My only criticism; if it really is one; is that it was a little too short.
What Dreams May Come (1998)
Didn't really get it.
Wouldn't say it's a poor film as such, just dont think I really fully understood it. Maybe that's a fault of the film or maybe me. Didn't find it especially moving, and I would say I'm actually a very emotional person. Wife loves it, says maybe because I'm not a spiritual person? Might try it again sometime. But not in a rush to be honest.
The Call of the Wild (2020)
Good family film. Very watchable.
A really nice family film, would watch it again on my own having said that. Nice story and good scenery. Yes its cgi for the animals but looks ok to me and keeps it on the right track between being too artificial looking and realistic. It's a really nice easy to watch film.
Joker (2019)
The easiest 10 ever.
The performance of Joaquin Phoenix would have been enough to warrant a 10 on it's own but the story and very much 'supporting' actors back it up 100%. His performance as his characters persona changes is truly immense. The more I think about his performance the better i realise it is.
