Almost Paradise (2020)
a fun ride
Discovered this by sheer chance on prime and really glad i did. The plots are good, plenty of action and in between the humour there are some great moments as the team develop their characters. In a week i got through the first 10 episodes and really want/ hope for a 2nd season. In this very serious world we are all in at present its nice to have a series like this to escape in.. Highly recommend it.
Godless (2017)
Engrossing Western Tale
Wasn't sure at first, seemed a bit low key and slow' so checked out the IMDB reviews and decided to stick with it. Am I glad i did, as it was thoroughly absorbing to watch. Apart from the intriguing story line it was to care that went into flushing out so many of the main characters. Its been a long time since i have seen that level of detail and its one of those rare events where you find yourself thinking about the characters, long after the credits have rolled. I am not an out and out Western fan but this was top notch, so well done to all the writers and cast, they did a great job. One I will remember for a long time to come , give it a go i think you will be pleasantly surprised if you like high drama.
The Good Cop (2018)
a fun ride for sure
When i first spotted this i thought it would be just another light drama that tries too hard, so i was all prepared to pull the plug 10 mins in. I could not have been more wrong...the plots are really quite good, with lots of twists along the way and the humour is refreshingly real, ie they don't play it for a quick audiance laugh, its far more subtle.
The best bit is the natural chemistry between the three main characters. I loved the disapproving looks that Josh Groban gives dad as he's the "squeaky clean" rule abiding detective son, whereas his dad Tony Danza is the less honest ex cop. That pairing is great to watch, as is the relationship between Josh Groban and his rookie detective played by Monica Barbaro....leading to a number of love hate humerous moments throughout.
I got to episode 10 faster than i thought and i knew it had been a fun ride as wanted it to go on a lot longer...can't wait for series 2...one of the best comedy crime series i have seen in a long time. Thoroughly recommended
La casa de papel: Bella ciao (2017)
Tuly Capitvating Series ...
Well in have just seen the last episode of Series2 and like many of the other reviewers applaud them for keeping it every bit as good as the first series. The production values were really high and the drama that unfolded was excellent and delivered at a high tempo. In the end the clever script shone through only eclipsed by the warmth of the acting which you really can't help but route for the "Heisters" ...the secret of a good series for me is you get to care passionately for the actors and this series certainly achieved that goal. The ending itself was superb and kept the viewer on a knifedge through to very end and how great is it to say that the 2nd series matched the first for intrigue and excitement. So highly recommended entertainment and just can't wait for the third installment. It looks as if the Spanish film industry is really going places at present and managing to give some of the Scandi Noir a run for their money. So enjoy
An Inspector Calls (2015)
Drama at its very best
I went into this with an open mind, as i knew it was a remake. Right from the start i was captivated by the enveloping period atmosphere and way the story weaved its story. The plot was simply superb, exposing the class divide and way that others can be mistreat their fellow man, without any conscious or care for the consequences. The lessons in humanity ring as true today as they did in that period so its still highly relevant and should provoke some internalising. However putting that all to one side the acting was simply top drawer and David Thewliss contribution was truly spellbinding. He was so commanding throughout and more than a match for the wealthy opposition he encountered that night. This was so good that i actually watched it three times back to back, as every scene was so immersive and tense. So if you like good drama you would be hard pressed to beat this and all the more amazing was the fact it was mostly delivered in a drawing room, so that speaks volumes for the way it was acted. So I hope you enjoy this period piece as much as i did
Magic in the Moonlight (2014)
A sheer delight.
well this was one of those films which intrigued me from the trailer, it looked to be a bit out of the ordinary and a more up market type comedy drama. I am so glad i persevered, as the whole film was a real delight to watch and had that cozy feeling helped by the lavish detail of that period. It had the feel of an Agatha Christie set but it cut its own path and delivered something refreshingly new. Colin Firth was truly excellent as the cantankerous, stubborn, pompous intellectual albeit you felt strangely protective about him. Emma Stone also acted wonderfully and was really engaging in her romantic role. To cap it off Eileen Atkins brought an old world wisdom to the screen and how we would all like to have an aunt like her. So if you love a good story well told, solid acting and some fantastic backdrops, you will have an entertaining time watching this, so enjoy it, as these sort of gems don't come along every day.
Hinterland (2013)
Surprisingly good murder series
Well I have to say that the title of the show did not initially grab me and I was guilty of thinking it may be a bit parochial and low key, as compared to some of the blockbuster series around these days but I am glad to admit that I misjudged that badly. Its really captivating to watch as the stories have a real edge to them and the plots are quite involved, as real life can be. I am a big fan of the new run of Swedish and Danish crime films, and this certainly matches them in terms of character development, intrigue and a haunting background that keeps the viewer glued to the screen. I also like the way the first two episodes involve murders with a murky history, similar to the style employed in the award winning Girl with a Dragon Tattoo. It also had a building story presence reminiscent of the excellent Broadchurch series, so I am now a big convert of what they have achieved with this....excellent drama, so please keep the stories going. Watch and you shouldn't be disappointed
Cougars Inc. (2011)
A hidden charmer
Like a few of the other reviewers, I thought this might have been one of those films I'd turn off in the first 5 minutes but to my surprise I really enjoyed it and if anything wanted the story to continue. It certainly stands out from the crowd and if you like strong characters then this won't disappoint.
Also interesting to see one the leads from Cold Case in another role, which Kathryn Morris excelled The film is engaging because of the way the main actor speaks to the screen and the 20 or so lead in questions posed. So if you think this is just another light weight, American comedy film, don't be fooled, it's much better than that.
So take a look at it and hope you enjoy it.
