A Stand Up Guy (2016)
Great story that builds more with each new scene! Pleasantly surprised!
A Stand Up Guy started out rough around the edges, but soon evolved into an engaging story we couldn't stop watching. It had some extremely funny lines and many great well-placed non-verbal laughs, too. The supporting cast really held their own. Each character was very memorable including those portrayed by familiar faces like Ethan Suplee, Bob Saget, Andy Fiscella, etc.
Some of the writing was spotty, but to be fair so are many films these days, not just lighthearted home-release comedies. The actors all nailed it. And, we loved the soundtrack, too!
This is a movie for anyone who needs to escape from life for a while to enjoy a well- crafted story and get many deep laughs with their friends or dates. Not for kids hence its rating. There will be critics who will harshly beat up films like this, but they're often the same types who take life more seriously than it deserves to be. This is one of the funniest films of the year....in its own special way.
The Great Gatsby (2013)
No, she wasn't Daisy, and too bad the whole film wasn't better.
I felt such a colorful character as Daisy would've better played by someone like Cameron Diaz or Drew Barrymore. Adelaide Clemens fell flat against the other stars. We needed someone breakthrough to fill this role or someone like Cameron or Drew to hold up to Leonardo's charisma and get some audience's reaction. Instead, the half-full theater was nearly silent the whole time. I have to agree with others who saw it that the addition of hip hop felt forced. I would've preferred an original score that felt pulled out of that Gatsby period. And it was a rough start with the screen writing. Less is more, Hollywood! Less is more! We were bored by weak lines. More could've been easily pulled from the book. The SFX and also the graphics at the close were incredible. They were vibrant and more than memorable, so I expect they'll inspire more great design from Hollywood. Overall, I was really expecting much more to honor F. Scott who lived and is buried in my hometown.
