Cui hua kuang mo (1993)
So much fun to watch!
Seriously bad acting, lapped up with bad editing (my friends and I joked that the entire movie took place over the course of one whole day because it was never shot at night).
However; on top of all that makes this "so bad, it's good"; the choreography and fight scenes are actually well done and a blast to watch! Yea, there are times where the actor blatantly misses a hit or kick, but it just adds to the overall charm. Definitely check it out.
Oldeuboi (2003)
A gut wrenching movie like few others.
There's nothing new I can say about Oldboy that hasn't been said before.
It's fascinating, sad, profound, astoundingly brutal, and just one hell of a final twist that churns your stomach upon its reveal and how the characters respond to it.
See it, and I promise; if you go in knowing nothing about it-it will surprise you.
Shingeki no Kyojin: Hero (2019)
Just absolutely breathtaking.
Unlike GoT, AoT is not afraid to hit its viewers with more death and insanity than you're ready for.
One death in particular, will forever be engrained in my mind. It had stellar animation, and just an overall heart wrenching despair throughout. Please, keep this kind of story telling going at this pace. It's so damn good.
Aquaman (2018)
Solid first act. Weird, middle school acting middle, and an okay finish
So yeah. The tone and backstory to all the characters was very interesting to see unfold all throughout the first act.
Then, when the two leads have to head to the Sahara desert: we're met with an odd music choice of a Pitbull song in slow motion for no reason. The two act like children and try to force chemistry between themselves in a very cringe worthy manner. I laughed at all the wrong things when they were in Italy (look for a quick shot of a guy biting fruit and going cross eyed-it's hilarious). And then when the action comes back, the tone is back from the first act... But is now riddled with predictability and convenient plot points just to get to the end.
The visuals are impressive, the action is solid, but I wouldn't recommend it as one of DC's absolute best.
Mandy (2018)
Beautifully colors, visceral gore, but loses steam throughout.
I had the pleasure of viewing Mandy with two friends and my wife, knowing nothing about the movie besides its trailer.
The color scheme in all the scenes, while some can be a strain on the eyes; really offers am other worldly look.
The slow burn buildup works very well in the first half as we're introduced to the characters and the plot. Then the proverbial s**t really hits the fan as we discover the cult and their intentions for the main character. It's at this point, I was hoping for a non stop brutal blood fest as the main character rampages through everyone that wronged him.
Now, don't get me wrong, the violence is perfect for fans of these genres. But it kept playing out like--main character finds first of 10 people, kills them, and then we drag as he travels to find the next one. This brings the excitement felt in the scene down a ton. I do love the movie as a whole, but don't know if I could sit through multiple viewings.
I recommend it for at least one viewing for you to decide, it's definitely not for everybody. But I will say the last shot of Nicolas Cage smiling it's one of the best and most hilarious things I have ever seen.
Mune : Le Gardien de la Lune (2014)
Wildly imaginative, but with an odd pacing
When I first watched Mune with my children, the visuals were immediately intriguing. It called to mind the likes of Kubo and the Two Strings. The premise is fascinating; this world and its inhabitants declare a guardian got both the sun and the moon that ride upon their prospective temples, bringing balance to the world.
The pace shifts gears from wondrous, to slightly frightening, to moments of humor, but all without a natural flow. This doesn't hurt the movie as a whole, but can mean you're watching a part, turn your head for a moment, them something else is happening that may feel unrelated to what you just saw.
Do watch this for the visual styles alone, it's a frequent watch in our home.
