All the charm of the original novel has been replaced by lots of growling.
5 January 2013
Tolkien must be spinning in his grave. This movies bears absolutely no resemblance to the book, aside from the names of the characters and the general plot.

There is no character development - everything is just a vehicle for the special effects. The story has been changed... I suppose they needed to to add more growly parts and 3D effects.

Of course, the technical wizardry is exceptional, but it's nothing we haven't seen before. And, when it comes down to it, it's the story that's the most important part. It's the story and the charming characters that made the book so popular - I've read it dozens of times, over the years.

Bottom line - if you removed all of the growling, you'd trim the movies down to about an hour and a half, at best, and you'd still be no closer to understanding the characters and their charm. I can see why they had to split the story into 3 parts - just to fit in all of the technical wizardry... and, of course, the growling.

Definitely a disappointment.

One of the worst movies I've ever seen
12 November 2005
I watched this crap based on the comments here, which, I now believe, must all have been written by someone involved with the making and/or marketing of the movie. I cannot believe that anyone actually thought this was a good movie... it is absolute crap. My wife and I gave up after 30 minutes when we realized that it just wasn't getting any better as time went on. What a waste of time.

To summarize...

It combines the worst acting, corniest dialogue and worst direction I've ever witnessed in the most excruciatingly slow paced movie I've ever tried to watch.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS. DON'T EVEN BOTHER WITH THE VIDEO.

Helen Hunt as a seductress???
27 May 2005
I can't believe that anyone thought that Helen Hunt's performance was anything but horrible. I don't know whether it was the fault of the director, the casting director, or that she just doesn't get Wilde, but it was possibly the worst performance of the year. This part needed a younger version of Susan Sarandon to pull it off. She just wasn't believable as a seductress, and her lines were delivered so poorly... it was excruciating.

Everyone else in the movie was wonderful, leading me to believe that it was just a poor casting choice or poor acting on her part.

See it, if you must, but be warned.
