Blonde (2022)
A very raw and bold bio fiction pic! Loved it!
Things to keep in mind before watching Blonde:
- It's not a biopic; it's not meant to be based on Monroe's life.
- It's based on a book also called "Blonde" by Joyce Carole Oates, which was a biographical fiction novel that's a "take" on Monroe's life.
- It's a very bold movie in its approach to such a controversial character.
- It's nothing you'll expect out of a "Monroe" movie. Nothing.
- Seriously, unpredictable af.
- It's definitely not for everyone, but I'm all for it. (Duh)
- Remember that we're talking Hollywood in the 1940s-1960s... think Hollywood is bad now? Oh, boy, it's a walk in the park compared to how it was back then! (As bad as it is, now).
- It's.. full of triggers. Everything. A very R rated movie... these guys weren't playing around with this.
- Good luck.
As for my personal opinion/review (no spoilers really, unless you have no idea about her life..)
I loved it, to be honest. I'd heard some things about it and I was even more intrigued by them to watch it.
The thing is, we don't know what happened to her in real life. What we have is bits and pieces, theories, explanations, filling between the lines, but we still don't know for sure. Could be because they didn't want us to and it was an assassination (which, let's face it, I wouldn't put past them), and it could have been that they drove her to commit suicide one way or another (which also, isn't unlike them. All of them).
It's not very far-fetched that a huge industry like Hollywood would exploit and control a woman's life, AND she was the biggest sex-symbol. Especially that it was much more male-dominant. Women were still fighting for most of the rights that we've had for a while now. It was a different world. One that isn't so kind to women, let alone famous sexualised ones.
She was involved with the freaking president of the USA, FFS! I mean, seriously? Literally, everything is possible here...
I think it's getting backlash because people don't like to see what their "icons" could have been behind the scenes. How cruel and destructive fame can be. Hell, we still see it. Social media is showing us what fame does to some people, and how others try everything they can to minimize being exposed to it and destroyed by it. But people like their polished idols, they don't like to see who they are behind their personas and masks.
This is a very possible scenario to any woman in Hollywood, then and even now. Which is sad... and not easy to watch.
It's out of the box. Again, very bold. Disturbing in many senses. In my opinion, maybe too realistic for the average viewer? But very intriguing and has many great performances. The direction is brilliant. It was an unexpected, heavy watch, indeed. I'm impressed. I donno if it's recommended or not? You decide for yourselves...
To Catch a Killer (1992)
This movie was a crime
I'm seriously speechless! And not in a good way! How could you have such a great opportunity to portrait one of the most notorious serial killers of all time and ruin it this badly is just beyond me!
First of all, the performance of Brian Dennehy was completely wrong! Gacy was known to be so friendly, helpful, an outstanding member of the neighborhood, etc. He wasn't a raging angry bull the way they showed him to be in the movie, He tried being cooperative during his house arrest, he invited the officers on surveillance to bars, restaurants, and to his own house, he was friendly with them. Yes, he did try to sue the police towards the end when being being watched exhausted him, but he wasn't aggressive with anyone on the force or threatened them the way it was shown in the movie.
The victims. Esp his last victim. Why did they change the name of the guy??? I mean, this is supposed to be a biography... Why change the names of key victims? Ok, maybe for the families' sake or smt, but still! They didn't even get the events surrounding the killings right!
What was that with the police NOT WEARING GLOVES during examining evidence in Gacy's house upon the first search?!?!?!!?! Seriously?! They were bagging them with their bare hands! It was so cringe worthy and my mind was screaming "YOUR FINGERPRINTS ARE ALL OVER THOSE THINGS NOW!", That was an unforgivable mistake considering that the whole movie was about the investigation!
A PSYCHIC???????? REALLY??? I cannot believe they added this dramatization! Why not also use an ouija board to communicate with the souls of the victims to know where they are while they were at it! What were they thinking!?!?!?!?!
If they only just did their homework and got the actual details on the whole thing! It was all twisted and a lot of things missing, and a lot of other things were presented horribly wrong!
Where is the part where Gacy was drunk on his last day of freedom and confessed to murders? Where is the part where he makes the real confession of everything in detail the day after? Where is the part where they were dragging the victims out of his house? That was on the evening news! Not like it was too gruesome to be added or anything! Just too many parts missing of everything that it made me extremely mad!
I went in thinking I'd finally watch something where it follows Gacy and shows bits and pieces of what actually happened. I know it'd be too graphic to actually show the exact same things he confessed to doing, but at least some! And fine, if they wanted to just follow the investigation, the least they could do was to be authentic about it! They only took very little literally, like some sentences Gacy said, and yet even then they twisted the events at which he said them.
It was just too frustrating, too boring, unbelievably infuriating, and such a bad experience over all! I basically wasted 3 hours of my life on this so called "based on a true story" movie about Gacy's arrest. If anything, I recommend people to NOT watch it and find a good doc on this to watch. It was so bad, I haven't been angry about a movie this much in ages! Such a missed chance! I gave it one star cos that's the least you can give.... if there were a zero, I wouldn't hesitate one moment to give it to this ridiculous parade of an attempt at a story this intriguing.
The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
Better Than The Book!
This is one of the best and most well made TV shows I've seen in a while! I'm very impressed by everything; the characters, the acting, the directing, the atmosphere, the originality, the suspense, the plot twists... all of it!
What I loved more than anything was the way they only took the concept from the book and worked from there. I truly wish all movies/TV shows based on books were made that way! They didn't take the same story and butchered it. They didn't take some of it and ruined it. They just took bits and pieces of the general idea and created something completely new! It's very rare that I get to say this: but this time around the show IS better than the book! Way better! And for the first time ever, if I'm ever asked about the book, I'll recommend watching the TV show instead; not the other way around! Which has never happened before!
"Journeys end in lovers' meetings". Just BRILLIANT!
You (2018)
Very Disappointing!
It was so sad for me to watch this because I had just finished reading the book when I found out that they made a series based on it. "Loosely based on it" is what they should've said! Not only that. Believe me, I did not expect it to be textbook identical to the book. Of course, I expected changes, but not to the point where the original story is completely ruined and something totally bad is made of a great and creepy story! The pilot was kinda faithful to the story, but then it started deteriorating until it became unforgivable.
The thing that really annoyed me was the way they started romanticizing the psychopath. It was sick to see them make you want to sympathize with him. How they made him kindhearted with ïssues"! In the book, it was way more realistic to how a psychopath's mind work. How they can't process emotions the way a normal person does. How they are monsters but really don't care one bit about it as long as it serves them, etc. All of that was demolished here!
At first I didn't mind the additional characters, it was fine by me until I realized how badly they affected the plot and how totally unnecessary it was to add them! I mean, why!?
All main characters lost their original structure which the book accurately portrayed. I hated how they ruined the ending beyond recognition!
It was a total mess from beginning to end and it kept getting worse and worse by the second. I wish they had stuck to the original story or just never made an attempt at bringing it to the screen because this was a huge lost potential!
If you haven't read the book, I highly recommend it. Especially for those who like twisted stories about stalkers and psychopaths. The series was not worth a moment of my life, unfortunately.
The Bay (2012)
Loved it! Chilling!
This film made me scared not because it had actual scares, but because it was realistic on so many levels! This could happen! The way it made sense was the most chilling thing about it. I went in expecting it to be another flick about some kind of a virus or a biological weapon, etc. To my surprise, it was way simpler than that and much more terrifying!
Very recommended.
Skjelvet (2018)
Not even close to its prequel!
It's sad but true. The wave was amazing not just because of its suspense, but also because its characters'actions made sense. And what makes this one even worse is that they are the same characters only stupid! I didn't mind the slow build to the the actual disaster; what annoyed me the most was how everyone was lame and slow and just unbelievably wrong when it comes to their reactions! Scenes where they're supposed to be running for their lives, but instead having melodramatic moments. Human instincts don't work that way or else there would never be any survivors in any life-threatening situation ever! It was so irritating to watch them behave this way after the amazing performance of the previous film!
It was a disappointment.
Bird Box (2018)
Better Than I Expected!
When it started I was hoping it's not another unoriginal apocalyptic plot, and thank Goodness it wasn't! The casting was great, the performances were good and Sandra Bullock was as usual as her best! I loved the suspense, kept me on the edge of my seat most of the time. The plot had many interesting elements. Not a masterpiece, but definitely enjoyable!
Awakenings (1990)
You'll Need Tissues!
This movie broke my heart on multiple occasions and in such beautifully sad ways. The legendary performances make it a masterpiece where everything falls into place (script, actors, directing, etc). Very recommended.
El cuerpo (2012)
This one got me!
I kept thinking it's predictable and still gave it a chance (although I wanted to stop it at some points cos I wrongfully thought I knew what was going on) and BOY was I wrong! Do not think for one second that you'll see the ending coming! It's smart, I'll give them that! Might not be completely realistic, but smart and I liked it! It was worth the wait. And throughout it wasn't bad at all! I just thought it would be what I expected it to be, and see for yourself how it can totally shock you in all the good ways! Enjoyable.
Relatos salvajes (2014)
Loved it!
Very enjoyable and unpredictable at times, and even when it's predictable it's fun to watch! The performances were great and the storylines were interesting and original. It was so much fun and after the first couple of sigmas you start getting excited about the next one! I wish they would make a sequel of the same things in this one!
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011)
It's a NOPE for me!
I know this is supposed to be a great spy flick, but it just did not cut it for me! I wanted to like it, I really did! It has some of my favorite actors of all time, but it was just too slow and too unexplained for my liking! I kept trying to keep up with the plot but they kept introducing characters without much of a background and it got me all confused! I love complicated plots but this one wasn't that! It was trying so hard to be a good spy movie and ended up being boring and misleading. I don't understand all the hype and the high ratings! Anyway, not my cup of tea, I guess!
Deadpool 2 (2018)
WOW!
This is the first time I write a review although I've been rating movies on here for years! But, man! This movie! I could not pass this one without saying something because those were the best 2 hours in a very long time!!! I haven't had this much fun in ages!
All the references? Always the best! I was afraid it wasn't gonna be as good as the first one (you know, sequels!) BUT it exceeded my expectations, and boy! was it good! DO NOT MISS THE POST CREDIT SCENES THEY ARE HILARIOUS! "
I'm definitely gonna be watching this one again! Just amazing!
