Journey to Bethlehem (2023)
Loved it...Great music, great choreography, great message!
It is a MUSICAL! Kind of the "Greatest Showman" vibe, meets the love story of Joseph and Mary...along with the powerful message of the Child who came to save the world. I know many have said it is hearsay, but I did not think that at all. We know almost nothing of Joseph and Mary so obviously none of that is in the Bible. The wise men were hilarious...not at all how the real ones likely were, but it's too tempting to call them the "wise guys". They did make their point though. It is obvious they are not trying to pass anything off as theology. Antonio Banderas did a great job as the troubled Herod (who knew he had such a great voice?), Joel Smallbone from "For King and Country" was phenomenal as the torn and troubled son of Herod...***spoiler*** who would come to know and appreciate the newborn King. Lecrae made a humorous Gabriel...and the rest of the cast was terrific. Don't go into this looking for a Bible lesson. It's not there. It is a great musical with a soundtrack worth downloading, and great choreography.
His Only Son (2023)
New Easter Tradition...Highly Recommend!
This is the POWERFUL and difficult story of Abraham and Issac, beautifully done and perfectly tied to the ultimate sacrifice of God's Only Son for us that we recognize Easter. It is heavy...but sure to usher in Passion Week for you in a powerful and personal way. It connects the dots between the story of Abraham from the Torah and the completed work of Jesus on the cross. The director's comments in the beginning were special and personal. This is a low budget film, beautifully done, that will hopefully be only the first for this talented director and his team. It is sure to become an Easter season tradition.
Paul, Apostle of Christ (2018)
An Important Film. Stirring. Brilliant.
This is an important film. It is the Bible come to life, accurately, and brutally. It speaks of hope, love, redemption, grace, and godliness. In Paul's writings, he paints a clear portrait of a Christ-follower and constantly reminds us why we do what we do. Jim Caviezel is brilliant as Luke, and it's hard not to see him as the Jesus he portrayed in "The Passion of the Christ". This actually works, because it is a subtle reminder of the unseen center of the story...Jesus. James Faulkner is exactly who you picture as Paul. His portrayal was spot on. The Bible does not address the end of Paul's life, but history does. This movie tells "the rest of the story" and in doing so, answers the persistent question "if God loves you, why does He let you suffer?". Read Luke and Acts to learn more. I encourage everyone to go see it to support a good film ...and to stir your soul.
I Can Only Imagine (2018)
Funny, interesting, inspiring and powerful
"I Can Only Imagine" was a funny, interesting, inspiring, and powerful true-story about the most popular Christian song of all time. It was lighthearted and funny when I needed an emotional break, but the message was strong. If you don't go because it is faith-based, you are missing out. If you grew up in the Amy Grant/Michael W. Smith era like I did...it will be a little nostalgic. Watching the band struggle in the early years reminded me of every kid I knew as a camp counselor at Camp Electric in Nashville. It made me smile. Dennis Quaid was impactful as the abusive father. It had something for everyone. I'll be going back next week with friends.
Ben-Hur (2016)
Hit Every Emotion in an Epic Way
I watched this movie because there was nothing else in the theater I wanted to see that night. I am so glad I did. The story seemed to pack in much more than the 2- hour running time. Every emotion was intensely felt and the story was deep and thoughtful. Visually, it was a beautiful movie and parts of the action made me forget to breathe. We went with our 17-year-old son who wanted to go to a coffee shop afterward to discuss the deep talking points in the movie. It made us think and affected us deeply. It is one of the few movies I want to see again because I feel I will pick up a deeper story the second time around. I think this version of Ben-Hur is just as epic as its predecessors. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Risen (2016)
Powerful Acting and Writing Give an Old Story New Perspective
Risen is a well done action movie with strong writing of an old story in a fresh new way. Please don't waste your time picking apart the theology. All direct quotes from the Bible were accurate and powerfully depicted. It is a FICTIONAL account through the eyes of Pontius Pilate's right hand man (Roman tribune) Clavis. No, Jesus and the disciples did not hang out with a Roman after the resurrection. We all know that. It deviates from the Biblical story to show a different point of view and they do it graphically and with a great connection to the audience.
This movie pretty much picks up where "Passion of the Christ" left off. They unabashedly told the story from the end of the crucifixion into the full-on resurrection, into the ascension and traveled with Christ into Galilee with the disciples all the way to the ascension. Somehow it was not hokey or silly. They did it well. I highly recommend you go see it while it is still in theaters. The scenery was beautiful.
War Room (2015)
Powerful Movie
This is another unapologetically religious movie from the Kendrick brothers. The budget has obviously gotten bigger and the acting is superb. Here is why I think you should go, whether you are the least bit religious or not. H.O.P.E. In this time of uncertainty and strife, this movie offers a burst of hope that maybe we are not fighting our personal battles alone. We all know THAT person in our lives who takes prayer very seriously. Even the most die-hard atheist will often find himself at the doorstep of THAT person when life seems desperate because the prayers they offer up just might make a difference. This movie takes the prayer room of the faithful and likens it to a combat "war room". How incredibly appropriate. It is heartwarming, funny, poignant, and meaningful. I see healing coming out of this movie. I also predict an increase of jump rope sales, and even some closets getting cleared out. I consider it a must see. Well done.
Moms' Night Out (2014)
Perfect Mother's Day Fun Embedded with Deep Truth about Motherhood
This movie is refreshingly wholesome and since I had my 17 year old daughter with me, it was nice not to worry about embarrassing scenes. I thought it was a girls movie, and it would be perfect for a girl's night out, but it was also a movie that would be awesome for a date night if you have young kids. It was funny, and quirky, but it also had moments of deep truth about what it is like to have those "mommie moments" when you just feel like a total out of control mess. It addresses the sense of failure moms with young kids and teenagers often have, and you walk out a little bit renewed. Dad's will gain better understanding of what it is like to be a mom. All of these cute life lessons are wrapped around goofy humor that is a lot of fun. Trace Adkins as a big, burly biker guy was adorable. This is a perfect Mother's Day movie that is totally appropriate for kids too.
Parental Guidance (2012)
Bravo to Hollywood for giving us something we all could enjoy!
Our whole family saw the movie "Parental Guidance" tonight (kids ages 14, 16 and 18). Besides being really, really, funny - it was packed with some pretty profound points of truth. The casting was perfect and each character brought an abundance of life to their role. My teenage daughter said "it was nice to see parents (and grandparents) that actually have fun together". That was true. Both couples were flirty (with their respective spouse), affectionate, and handled conflict with each other respectfully. My 14 year old son said "I now know what 'feel good movie' means". Every couple with a young family should see this movie ... well, actually everyone should. I hate to say it, but the modern family is not generally portrayed in a good light. This movie brought so many precious elements to the family dynamic. We all needed a good laugh. Bravo to Hollywood for giving us a good one!
