Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
I didn't find it believable
Sorry but I found Dr. Hartford's responses to his wife's demeaning "revelations" and especially to the threats on his life implausible to the point of being irritating. Seriously, who lets a friend ask, "What the hell were you thinking" after going through what Dr. Hartford went through without responding, "What the hell were *you people* thinking, threatening someone's life just for crashing a private party? Tell me how to get in touch with my friend Nick, or I'm going to the police." But I'm glad I watched this film, because now I understand where the QAnon conspiracy theory of a cabal of Satan-worshiping elites came from. Maybe they thought that this film was a documentary. I guess if you believe that conspiracy theory has any basis in reality, the film makes sense. Kudos to the choreographer of the Satanic incantation scene, though. That was very well-done.
Shuffle (2011)
A rather juvenile parable
I'm not sure that I understood the premise of this movie. Ostensibly, we're seeing fragments of Lovell's life -- out of order, but all real and consistent -- until near the end, when an accident occurs that appears to be in direct contradiction to a fragment shown earlier in the movie. And. If the earlier fragment didn't actually happen, then the ending scene with his father and him makes very little sense. All in all, this film felt more like a parable for juveniles fabricated specifically to reinforce Christian notions of acceptance, forgiveness and selflessness than a film about real human emotions. If you like overly sentimental Christian parables, you'll probably like this movie, but I find them annoying.
Pale Blue Moon (2002)
The Story Has Potential
I liked the general storyline, but there were too many unbelievable plot elements, like a police officer having to transport a mentally disturbed and agitated man in the passenger seat of his own vehicle with no restraints, with no rationale for such a decision provided by the story. The consequences of that decision are, of course, completely predictable, but the officer never learns from any of those consequences. And exactly what happened in the ending is anybody's guess. Mrozek gives a good performance as the mentally disturbed Simon Applewhite. I'd like to see a remake that fixes the flaws of this movie.
The Reflecting Skin (1990)
Starts out well
This movie starts out well, then goes off the rails. It could've had a believable ending if the protagonist, Seth, had said anything about things that he knew and saw, like any child would reasonably do, at any of several points in the story. I know that children growing up in sick, abusive families don't always behave in expected ways, but Seth discusses many, many events in his life normally with others, making his silence on the key events unbelievable. I kept waiting for him to suddenly reveal the key events to others, but that revelation never comes. The cinematography is beautiful. The story is well-acted; it just isn't believable.
Favor (2013)
I wasn't expecting this
People should really be warned when they're about to watch a snuff film. I'm not sure who enjoys this film, and I definitely don't want to ever meet any of them.
Fear X (2003)
Infuriating
There really need to be strong warnings attached to Scandinavian films like this for the protection of those involved in making them. It's infuriating to have one's time wasted by movies that have no conclusion.
The Hitler Chronicles: Part1 1889-1929 (2018)
Great footage, but unlistenable
The narration of interesting quotes by figures of the time is almost entirely smothered by loud music and ambient sounds. I hope the sound editor was shot.
