Jersey Boys (2014)
I Couldn't Take My Eyes Off It For A Second!
I can't give this movie enough praise. I have seen the Broadway show multiple times, even once with the original cast. I had high expectations for it, and it met all of them. The music was wonderfully timed, it was very well directed and great overall. If this film is not nominated for an Oscar, I will be shocked. It was captivating, and I found myself thinking "Is it over already?" There were so many things that were taken straight from the show, and the music itself was amazing, as expected. The audience in the theater I went to see it in even applauded a few times. If anyone tells you to wait for this to come out on DVD, don't listen and see it for yourself. It'll be worth every penny and you'll leave the theater humming the tunes, if you don't already know them. I recommend this to everyone who is a fan of the Four Seasons, if they are a fan of the play, or just want to see a phenomenal movie that will stay with you for a long time.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013)
Amazing in Every Way, Shape, and Form
I have been eagerly awaiting the sequel to The Hunger Games for over a year. I finally went to see it yesterday after planning the date weeks ago. I would have loved to have gone earlier, but I had to be in a play. I went to a matinée and my mind was blown. I was a little scared because I was awfully disappointed with the first movie. When I heard there was a new director, I was excited, then anxious because Francis Lawrence,I figured, could go both ways: give us a portrayal of the book that was extremely accurate and way better than the first, or a crap movie that was worst than the first. Fortunately, it was not the latter. It was worth the three hours in the movie theater (There were like 8 previews!) and worth being late for my makeup call. The only reason I gave this a 9 out of 10 stars is because there were a few things I would have liked to be included that weren't and one thing done differently. I would have liked them to show Haymitch in his Hunger Games, the runaways from District 8 and how Katniss found out about the uprisings in the other districts. Most of these, however, were a direct result of the first movie's mistakes, specifically how the Mockingjay pin came into Katinss' possession. Overall, it is a very good adaption of a very good book.
Barney & Friends (1992)
Too Critical
Before I go into this review, let me introduce myself. I was born in April 1999, I'm a freshmen in high school, I have a 4.0 GPA and this recently finished quarter had a 98% average in school. I am a competitive cheerleader as well as a school cheerleader and a dancer. Also, my mother has been an elementary school guidance counselor for 20 years, so for six years before I was born.
I watched Barney and Friends when I was little, and I honestly can't remember much of it other than it was my great grandmother's favorite show to watch out of all the programs I was exposed to.
I do not, however, recall anything people have been complaining about. I don't recall the "Strangers are friends you haven't met yet" or whatever episode. People don't go into this realizing it's a KID'S SHOW. I grew out of it before I was in grade school. I was my mother's first child, so she tried her hardest to not screw me up. So she let me watch Barney? Revisit my brief introductory paragraph. Do I sound screwed up? I think SpongeBob is way worse than Barney, as studies have shown Spongebob shortens children's attention spans and delivers inappropriate themes.
I have never gotten molested or abducted even though I'm extremely naive. Even if I did watch that episode about strangers, my grandmother, mother, babysitter or great grandmother (assuming she could hear the TV because if I was 2, she was 80) probably sat me down and told me they were referring to children of my age, not grown-ups. If a child did get kidnapped because of this supposedly evil message from the show and the parents are blaming it on Barney, they should be blaming themselves for not clarifying and making the topic more coherent.
Another great example: When I was little, my mother would let me watch Sex and the City with her. It's not like I wanted to, I was just kind of there, but I watched it all the same. Any time I would ask her about something on the show, she would tell me and I would find it "gross." I have not repeated anything said, done, or talked about on that show because she explained it to me.
In conclusion, let you're children watch Barney. It's not the worse thing on television, and it does have some good morals for the right audiences (Preschoolers and under).
Thanks for reading.
Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (2012)
Not As Bad As I Thought
My brother wanted to see this movie when it debuted in February 2012. I had no interest, because I thought it was going to be a kid's movie I would eventually watch and hate. I never did see it in the theaters, but when I was on a bus trip, it was one of the movies we had no choice but to watch. I didn't regret it. The good thing is that you don't have to see the first one (Journey to the Center of the Earth (2008)) to understand this one. In fact, I still haven't seen the first movie to this day, and I have seen this movie many times. I know some may wonder why I waste my time with this movie, and the answer: Josh Hutcherson. Let's face it; he's hot. I don't really pay attention to the dialogue, but even I have to admit, it was a little less than mediocre. Michael Caine was OK, I was not real familiar with the pilot guy, Dwayne Johnson did as well as he could for a kid's movie, and Josh Hutcherson was pretty good. The only person I had a problem with was Vanessa Hudgens. I've never cared much for her, but she's not a great actress, and her character was dull, and kind of rude. To me, other than the small romance between her character and Josh Hutcherson's character, she was not needed. Overall, you either will like or hate this movie. I suggest watching it on TV before buying it (Cinemax and HBO have it on a LOT, so it wouldn't be hard to find. If I remember correctly, it was on this morning, and I was watching it). I can't say if you will or won't like it. That part is up to you.
Friends (1994)
They'll Be There For You
This is hands-down one of the best sitcoms I have ever seen. Despite what some people say, it is not playing it safe at all. There have been many imitations of Friends, and this where those entire crappy knock-offs came from. This is the original that cannot be beat. People also say the series can't be related to, but I beg to differ. If you asked any adult, I guarantee they would tell you that one situation one or more of the main characters got into they have been in also. The comedy is just one of the things I like about it. A lot of it is something recurring, like an inside joke. Most of it is sarcastic, witty, high comedy that takes a level of thinking, which is why I didn't like it until I was about twelve, when I could understand it, although my mom would watch it when I was really little, like not big enough to walk, and I could remember the theme song from when I was, like, 3 months old, and some snippets of some episodes. That is how memorable the show is. There is some low-typed comedy that you don't have to think too much about to make it funny, too, but it's not that immature potty-humor type, but some slapstick stuff here and there. The characters are memorable and lovable, because they all have quirky little things that make them different. My personal favorites are Chandler, Joey, and the completely overlooked Phoebe. Overall, it's a must-watch for anyone who wants a feel-good comedy that is not stuffy, but instead will pull you in and make you wish it was still on. I highly recommend this series, and you will not regret watching it.
