The way I saw it was like this: We are supposed to see these events thru the younger boys eyes.
He does not know where his father was, why he came back, what he was doing. The father had an agenda on top of seeing the boys (meeting the people, going to the island, talking to people on the phone, getting the mysterious box). The younger boy knew there was another reason his father was taking him on the extra trips, he knew while his father might have wanted to see him too,, there was another side of his father that he did not know, and that troubled him. So thats the way this movie was, we see the events thru the eyes of the boy,, we also don't know whats going on with the father or what he's up to,, who he talks to or why he dragged us, I mean, the boys away from fishing to this mysterious island to, we get an uncomfortable feeling but at the same time see some caring deep inside. WE don't really like the father and suspect he's up to no good, but deep down we want everything to work out between the three,,, as does the boy I believe.
