Death on the Nile (2022)
Really rather good !
So I love the 1978 version . Fantastic costumes and hilarious performances from Dame Maggie Smith, Dame Angela Lansbury and Bette Davis . And Sir Peter Ustinov the definitive Poirot .
But hold on .. Sir Kenneth Branagh has cleverly added some neat twists to the plot . A great opening scene where we discover the reason for his extravagant moustache . There are a few subtractions and additions to the multiple characters too . Some outstanding performances especially Annette Bening and Sophie Okanado . Once you're used to French and Saunders and realise this isn't one of their parodies they work well too ! Oh and a nice twist on their pairing .
It looks stunning and wonderfully cinematic . And a hopeful and rather sweet ending too.
A New Kind of Love (1963)
Dated sex comedy but not without merit
Very much of its time . As in very sexist ! But Paul and Joanne have fun and as always a great chemistry between them . As always Thelma Ritter steals every seen ! Was there ever anyone better at the wise cracking one liners ?!
The Whisperers (1967)
Dame Edith Oscar robbed
One of Oscar's biggest ever mistakes not awarding Dame Edith here . She is absolutely brilliant. A heart heart wrenching performance. Katharine Hepburn's win was purely sentimental and made even more unjust that she won the following year ( and thoroughly deserved that one)
The Sound Barrier (1952)
Sir Ralph Oscar snubbed !
One of the academy's biggest snubs as Sir Ralph won the Bafta, New York film and national board of review and not even nominated . One of his very best performances.
A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy (1982)
Very under rated
I thought this was really quite good. Had not seen before as is never really mentioned or advertised. Particularly enjoyed Julie Hagerty's performance. I don't know why she has not been a bigger star and more used in films. Her timing and line delivery is very funny. Jose Ferrer also excellent at his pompous best. Mia farrow and Mary Steenbergen both look lovely in the summer drenched locations, that look like one of Englands Southern Shire Counties! Perhaps not Woody Allens best, but as he apparently 'hates' the country side, some gorgeous scenes filmed by Gordon Willis. I have given this a '7'rating, and would certainly recommend to all.
