Big Trouble in Little China (1986)
The pinnacle of film-making
Few movies will ever compare to the wonder that is "Big Trouble in Little China". Kurt Russell and Kim Cattrall lead a wonderful group of character actors in this action movie with a true sense of adventure.
The plot revolves around the kidnapping of Miao Yin (Suzee Pai), the fiancée of Wang Chi (Dennis Dun). Jack Burton (Russell), friend of Wang, gets involved to help rescue her. The plot moves along to include a Chinese sorcerer who is 3000 years old, creatures which live under San Francisco, a 6-Demon Bag, and being able to see what other men cannot see.
If there is one thing that is obvious about this movie, it's that everyone involved had a blast filming it. You can tell Russell and Cattrall were having fun, as well as the other players in the story. As the story revolves around a trucker with a male ego the size of Saturn, you know it's going to involve much banter and wit which revolves around machismo. And the story delivers.
Best of all, this story is perfect for adolescents. There is sporadic use of four-letter words, as well as a veiled visit to a "house of ill repute", but these scenes are minor in the movie, which moves from fight scene to fight scene with giddy excitement.
Filmed in 1986, this story still packs a punch and is great for any boys-nights of any age at your home. 10 out of 10.
Get Bruce (1999)
Painfully unfunny
My friend got this and said he heard rave things about the movie. We sat down to watch it, and in 45 minutes, nobody laughed. It was horrible. Bruce Vilanch's humor is canned, non-spontaneous, and chuckingly topical. When he says he goes to an area and scans a newspaper to make jokes and prepare his humor, it really makes me think of him as a speechwriter rather than a comic. Everyone says the best part of the movie is Robin Williams, and that's obvious-- Robin Williams is funny. Hairy, but funny. Bruce is hairy and not funny. It was a great contrast to two people of two completely different styles.
If you have any doubt about Bruce's lamebrained, canned humor, watch Hollywood Squares, and notice how the questions are carefully pitched right towards him for maximum comedic effect. What's worse is that he sits next to Whoopi, and she's equally as bad.
It's terrible when you're hoping Ted Danson will show up in Blackface just to make something more interesting.
The Daily Buzz (2002)
Awesome
My wife and I started watching the Daily Buzz when we moved here in August, 2003. It's the best morning show. Take 1/2 the zaniness of your average radio show, and 1/2 the news of your average network show, and throw in a dose of charisma, and you've got the Daily Buzz. I love the fact that it's not an "ego-driven" show, like with Katie Couric or Paula Zahn. The three anchors interact with the crew, and their special correspondents, such as Clayton (Clifton!) Morris and Dao Vu, are treated as friends in making the strangest yet most entertaining morning show around. The show seems to be a small budget morning show out of Cincinatti or Indianapolis. It should get more money and more recognition, because it deserves it.
