Bloodsport: The Dark Kumite (1999)
An unintentional comedy.
* Minor Spoilers Below *
This movie is hilarious. 95% of the cast is Russian, although it's supposed to be taking place in America. The villain is a guy who calls himself Caesar, lives in a big mansion, and has about 30 female slaves. His sidekick is the prison warden who screams like a maniac if a fighter doesn't kill the other guy.
What's interesting is that in Bloodsport 2 and 3 the main character is "Alex Cardo" played by Daniel Bernhardt, and in this one Daniel Bernhardt plays a guy named John Keller, nothing to do with the previous 2 films. What the heck? Let me sum up the plot. John Keller infiltrates a prison where prisoners keep mysteriously disappearing. His job is to find out what's going on. There he meets psychopath Justin Caesar (Ivan Ivanov) and the sadistic warden Preston (Derek McGrath).
I would really like to know how this guy got to direct this film. I love this movie so much because I laugh a lot when I watch it. It is truly an unintentional comedy, and I have already recommended it to friends. The best part is two people singing at this kumite and dancing around for a couple of minutes before the fighting begins. Another great thing is the way Caesar talks. This guy is extremely slow, and his voice is sometimes not in sync with his mouth-movements.
On an entertainment level, this gets a 7. On a quality level, this get's a -5.
Crackerjack 2 (1997)
Sadistic and perverse, but not to be taken seriously. (SPOILERS)
**SPOILERS BELOW***
This is another project by the team of Lloyd A. Simandl and Christopher Hyde from North American Pictures. What does this mean? It means that you should expect bad dialogue, bad acting (with a few exceptions), stereotypical villains, bad plot, at least one lesbian scene, and numerous scenes of torture. Just for your information, Crackerjack 2 has absolutely nothing to do with parts 1 or 3. The only small similarity is that the lead character's first name is Jack. In the first two it's Jack Wild, and in the third one it's Jack Thorn. Now let's get to the plot. The good guy, Jack Wild (Judge Reinhold), has been tracking terrorist Hans Becker (Karel Roden) for a long time. Becker killed his wife in a car bomb, so Jack feels strong hatred for this guy and wants to catch him badly. In the meanwhile, Jack's wife Dana (Carol Alt) goes on a business trip with many rich people in a train in the rocky mountains, and the train gets hijacked by Becker and his crew. Everyone gets taken hostage. Then we discover that the mastermind of the whole operation is not Becker, but a mysterious man named Smith, played by Michael Sarrazin.
Smith and his bisexual sidekick Jasmine (Katerina Brozova) then inflict various types of pain upon their rich hostages to try to get their account numbers and extract large sums of money. In the end, Jack saves many people, rescues his wife, and kills the bad guys. Now, the acting in this film is bad, except for Carol Alt and Michael Sarrazin. Judge Reinhold is good at some points, but he's not as serious as he should be. The rest of the cast acts very amateurish if that's a good way to describe it. The "special effects" are horrible, and the explosions are done very badly. Although you might not expect it, this movie is not boring. In fact, it is entertaining. Even though the "quality" is very very cheap, and as I said, the plot overused and the acting very bad, this movie can be a good rent some night when you run out of ideas on what film to watch. The only thing I would like to know is how Michael Sarrazin got to be in this film?? He is a good actor and really shouldn't be doing garbage movies. I would really like to know how he got this role. Judge Reinhold too for that matter. How does Lloyd Simandl get these people? It's a mystery.
Other titles similar to this one are "Final Conflict" and basically every other movie by Lloyd Simandl. Even though this one was not directed by Simandl, he was the producer, and that is why it is what it is. Although "Robert Lee" directed this one, I can't tell the difference. This movie gets a 4 out of 10 from me, almost a 5 because it is entertaining. But on a "quality" level or "acting" level, it gets about a 1 or 2. If you're looking for something "serious," then I don't recommend this title. However if you're looking for something entertaining and fun, then this you might like.
American Samurai (1992)
Very good movie.
This is an excellent movie in my opinion. Good plot, amazing fighting scenes, and great effects. David Bradley does a great job, and so does Mark Dacascos. However, if you really want to enjoy this movie, don't get the US VHS version, because it is heavily cut. The UK VHS, although it is PAL, has only 1 second missing, and it's a part where a man pulls out a knife in a disco. The reason they cut this out is to prevent kids from imitating this (yeah I know it sounds funny). However, EVERYTHING else has been left intact. Since it is PAL, you would have to convert it to NTSC, but it is much much better than watching the heavily edited US tape.
The French DVD titled "American Samourai" is completely uncut, and also has the one second missing from the UK tape. The bad thing is that this french DVD does not have English sound, only french.
Anyway, this movie is an excellent martial arts movie!
Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004)
Nothing but the truth.
First let me say how interesting it is that this movie wasn't shown in 2 main theaters in my town, which usually have every movie that comes out. Yes, people know it's the truth, and they are afraid. Now... this is an amazing movie, pure and simple. It is a masterpiece documentary that everybody should see. This film shows nothing but the truth about who the American government is, and it goes into details with nothing but facts. It covers everything from Bush and 9/11 to Afghanistan and Iraq. I didn't learn much from this movie that I didn't already know, but it served as a great reminder. I'd like to thank Mr. Moore for being so brave and creating this movie. I'd also advise him to be very careful now and stay safe. Advice for everyone else: go see Fahrenheit 9/11 now. 10 out of 10. I would give it more but I can't.
Hellraiser: Hellworld (2005)
Unique and good idea, and better than Inferno and Hellseeker.
I just saw this at a small screening down in Schenectady.
***Slight Spoilers Might Be Below***
"Hellraiser: Hellworld" is a movie about "Hellraiser" itself. Five good friends, fans of the Hellraiser computer games each receive an invitation from a site called Hellworld.net to come to a secret mansion, alone. Once there, the action begins.
Lance Henriksen puts a good performance (like always) as one of the dead kids' angry father.
Very suspenseful, gory, and action-packed. Found it to be a good and unique idea, and liked it more than Hellraiser: Inferno and Hellraiser: Hellseeker. Others might not. Cool ending as well.
I give it 7 out of 10.
