Staten Island Summer (2015)
Not funny
What do you get when you cross the classics Caddyshack and Superbad with Lorne Michaels producing? An unfunny movie that is not surprisingly disappointing. Has anyone done more to set comedy back 100 years than Michaels? If you are going to rip off characters from comedic genius' Ramis and Apatow then make sure you steal their jokes too. The acting is good but the premise is stale. Kate Walsh, in particular, plays a strong role as Danny's overprotective borderline neurotic mom. Beyond the acting, the writing is average. What could have been funny scenes fall short of hitting the comedic mark. Overall, I give it 3 out of 10 stars and that's being generous. If you have time rent Superbad and Caddyshack. The originals are much better versions than this poor derivative.
The Call (2013)
Good film except for ending
This film was good and had the adrenaline pumping right from the start. The plot was believable and solid with outstanding acting especially by Abigail Breslin. The film went off the tracks near the end when Halle Berry's character goes to the cabin of the kidnapper. Of course this happens at night and for some mysterious reason the police have abandoned the cabin altogether even though they have no idea where the kidnapper is. I think in real life they would have been monitoring it to see if there was anyone coming or going. The root cellar, where kidnapper and kidnapped are hiding, is found by Halle Berry's character and I am not sure how but the top is undisturbed. How did the kidnapper crawl out and put weeds over the top when he is inside the whole time?
At the very end is when the whole thing unravels. Halle Berry's character knocks the kidnapper out and turns her back to console the kidnapped girl. Guess what happens..yes..the kidnapper rises again to reek more havoc. How many times must Hollywood go to the well and throw that same bit on us. I just assume now if the bad guy is knocked out they will rise again in one last attempt to foil the good guys. Finally, the kidnapper is tied up and left to rot in the cellar while everyone goes on about their lives. Wouldn't the police be looking for a kidnapper who is also a murderer? I am assuming police dogs who would run to the cellar in 2 seconds and the kidnapper would be found. Then the two good guys would be up on charges of kidnapping the kidnapper. Yes, Hollywood, we are too dumb to ever notice anyone of this.
