Alfa (2020)
Good series but...
The storyline was well conceived and there were plenty of twists and turns, particularly for the protagonist, Adam. The characters were all believable, although I thought Tommy's wife would have been much harder.
But... there were two many long close up shots and slow panning shots that added nothing to the plot and just made the pace of the story falter. There were also a lot of pregnant pauses and nearly every character had a problem answering simple questions, which was very frustrating. The screenplay therefore also meant the story kept losing pace and at times was boring.
A shaper script and less prolonged shots would be a must for a second series.
Deadline (2022)
2+2=4
The first two episodes were slow, but thoughtful with lots of questions to be answered. However by E3 it started to include ridiculous plot lines and went down hill from there. E4 was pathetic. And of course the police in Hungry and the UK were incompetent and failed to seriously investigate the evidence. And not only was the plot resolution totally unbelievable but the final outcome the work of a wishful but terrible script.
Angela Black (2021)
More holes in the plot than my colander bowl!
A thriller should have an audience on edge and seemingly there should be no escape from a dramatic scene except a plausible twist. However, the writers of Angela Black have created so many plot holes to achieve dramatic effect, the series has lost all credibility.
For instance, there is no lawyer at her interview at the end of E2 and the police unbelievably never checked the book for fingerprints - because if they had, they would only found Olivier's prints, or at least no prints from Angela. BTW, fingerprints on paper can last up to 40 years!
And then there's the psychiatrist, who is so amateurish it's an insult to the profession.
Yes, it's only a TV series, but it should reflect reality and not bend the plot for cheap dramatic effect.
I'll not go into detail, but the handing of domestic abuse and a woman's fear of her husband is not given the seriousness it deserves.
La forêt (2017)
Good story spoilt by a poor script with lots of holes.
The "open door" policy of the local police, where anyone has access to the station - even the evidence room, is unbelievable! The lack of police integrity, confidentiality and professionalism must seriously upset those who do their best to uphold the law in small communities.
Much of the mystery is drawn out by unreal dialogue or characters, time and time again, not answering questions. And not only is Virginie a bad mother and terrible police woman but a bad actor too! Only the Captain and the teenagers produce excellent acting.
Such a shame that what should have been a decent thriller turns out to be an annoying series.
PS Episode 1 & 2 were good but it all goes downhill after that with many quite ridiculous scenes i.e. They lack careful scripting.
Forbrydelsen (2007)
Great first season but then goes rapidly down hill
After an amazing first season, the series gradually goes down hill. Series 1 was absorbing and excellent 9/10. Series 2 was good but nothing new. 7/10. Series 3 was a melodrama and not a thriller. 5/10 The police and politicians are nearly all portrayed as corrupt, woefully inept and nearly everyone holds back vital clues for no credible reason to support a weak plot. The perpetrator also seems to have limitless criminal skills and resources to hand which is just a joke. Too much of the plot is based on unfinished answers to straight forward questions or no answer at all. All of which go to hide the weak plot. The finale is pathetic with the protagonist acting so out of character! I see there is a season four. I won't waste my time on that.
