By the end I was praying for death
3 February 2024
Don't be fooled, this movie is horrible. Dodgy CGI, Henry Cavill, John Cena and Bryan Cranston totally wasted, long interminable stretches where literally nothing happens. Sam Rockwell was the only saving grace. And here's a note for the filmmakers: oil is not very flammable, a gunshot won't start a raging fire. If you have to stop the action for long boring stretches to explain the plot, you're doing something wrong. Also here's a suggestion for Bryce Dallas Howard - if you are going to wear a slinky dress for a large part of the movie, PUT DOWN THE FORK! A terrible, horrible waste of time and money. I should have stayed home and watched Miami Connection. That's how bad this movie is.

Let's talk about the supporting players
28 March 2023
When people discuss this movie they single out Keanu and Donnie Yen, and rightfully so. Yen is a revelation in his role and Keanu has his character down pat, but let's give a little love to the supporting players. Hiroyuki Sanada brings his patented gravitas to his role as the manager of the Osaka Continental. Scott Adkins is both funny and badass in his fat suit. Shamier Anderson (and his dog) add a humorous touch to the proceedings. Lance Reddick (RIP), in a small role is very good and Ian McShane does his usual stand up performance. Other characters like Hiroyuki Sanada's daughter and the guy who plays the Marquis' bodyguard are very good, too. This is one of the best acted action movies ever.

Well done episode
3 February 2023
This may be one of my favorite episodes of the show. Alternately funny and scary, this is the kind of plot that they do best. Jensen Ackles does comedy so well, especially in his interactions with Ben, it makes you wonder why he hasn't been given more opportunities in film and television. Both he and Jared Padalecki handle the action scenes well, the fight in the empty house being a standout of shooting and editing. The most notable part of the fight is the absolutely fantastic score, the kind of music that highlights the action without overwhelming the plot. All in all, one of the best episodes of Supernatural.

Lovecraft Rip-Off
25 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Canadian update of the H. P. Lovecraft story "Beyond The Wall of Sleep." Scientists use a device that can record people's dreams to try and help a young girl who dreams of weird, shadowy figures whose purpose is never explained. This Movie has some problems.

First of all, I don't care how old the lead actress is, her character looks 15 so the creepy Harry Potter lookalike scientist who stalks and eventually sleeps with her is a disturbing touch. The dream sequences are repetitive and over long, and the climactic "Sleepwalking" scene is interminable. And what was up with the vampire teeth? A nice try at updating Lovecraft, but this movie would benefit from some slash and burn editing and a MUCH better twist at the end.

Nothing new here, but still pretty good.
26 August 2022
This is a refreshingly low key superhero movie compared to the usual Marvel bombast. The child actor was not annoying and his relationship with Stallone's character was pretty good. The first two thirds of the movie was a little sparse on action as they built the characters, but they made up for it with a balls out third act. You can see the twist coming a mile away, but to be fair, they don't make much effort to hide it. All in all, a pretty good movie well worth a watch.

Fast paced and exciting
21 April 2022
This Uruguayan film falls squarely into the 28 Days Later category of fast zombies. It seems that the people who made this movie took ideas from other films, but tweaked them enough that I wouldn't consider it a rip off. Regardless, this is a worthy entry into the genre. It only takes a short while to take off, but then it never stops. Lots of eye catching tracking shots, and while it takes place mostly in a darkened gym, you can see what's going on. Well directed, edited and acted, this was a fun watch. Highly recommended.
