Crazy, Not Insane (2020)
Hocus pocus.
Every cold blood serial killer pines for a dr.lewis . A doctor who will believe anything and everything they are told .
Usually by manipulative people doing life with nothing to lose.
Fortunately we get the shawcross debacle and Dr. Park Dietz and his voice of reason .
Surprisingly her credibility returned after 3 years when really she should have been blacklisted.
The Lodge (2019)
Great to see Alicia Silverstone back with a bang .
Great performances for a rather dull and predictable horror film .
The Call of the Wild (2020)
CGI overload.
The first minute becomes apparent that there is no dog. It's a computer generated one .
Obvious one and not very good.
You lose that human element.
A CGI animal is impossible to care for .
The film didn't pick up and it couldn't recover .
Rambo: Last Blood (2019)
John Rambo does Jason Voorhees.
Wow! This was bad , real bad. Gratuitous , Wanton and Ridiculous .
The last third of the film could set with the theme music from Benny Hill show. The story was pointless . Acting was wooden . GCI deaths looked like from 1993. I really can't understand why large amounts of cash were thrown towards making this . I've seen better looking cinematography on small independent films. This looked incredibily cheap.' First Blood' was great classic but each film has been a slow decline and now a slow death.
Deaths are all done for comedic purposes. At least that's how they turned out..
Avoid . Save your money. 1/10. The generous 1 for The Doors in the film.
Echo in the Canyon (2018)
Where were The Doors .?
How do you make a film about the music that came out of laurel canyon and leave out the biggest and most influential band of the time ? This is how .
Maybe I'll make a film about the English invasion and omit the Beatles .
Dead Man (1995)
Psychedelic western but in black and white.
I first stumbled across this film back in the late 90's while I was up all night with insomnia. I was a teenager and didn't really know what I was watching . I didn't know the Rimbuad or Blake references or wasn't a big fan of Neil Young or Jarmusch for that matter.
A few years later and I still adore this film. The haunting minimalistic score by Young pulsates throughout. It never has you at ease. Even with that beautiful cinematography. The choice to film it in black & white is perfect. It wouldn't have worked in Color.
The cast , lead by Johnny Depp back in his prime. Iggy Pop , Billy Bob thornton , Gabriel Byrne, John Hurt and Robert Mitcham in one of his last roles.
I have friends who just don't get 'dead man' but also have friends who see it has the masterpiece it is.
9/10.
The Fifth Estate: Just Another Missing Kid (1981)
Sad Indictment of the system . Both then and now.
The death of a loved one is one of the worst things that happen in a life time. What is worse is not knowing what happened to that person. Where are they?
This is how documentaries should be done. It really puts the viewer into the family and the detective hired to find their missing son.
A young man drives a car from Canada to The US in 1978 and agrees to call a certain time every night. He calls to say he has car issues and then the phone calls stop. He is missing.
Did the earth swallow him up?
This is an emotional ride where you are emotionally invested the whole time.
The police are less than useless. Telling parents that we can't look for your son but we'll let you know if his automobile shows up in a river or a creek is cold as its gets.
Highly recommended. 8/10.
Salinui chueok (2003)
Murdered women , 3 detectives & Fly kicks .
I don't watch much South Korean cinema. Not nearly enough. "Old boy" was the bar. The high water mark for me. Until yesterday when some insomnia led me to 'Salinui chueok' or 'Memories of murder.'.
The beautiful cinematography , the direction , the story ,the acting. All top notch.
I don't know if the actors are big stars in their country but I wouldn't be surprised.
The story is based on the real life unsolved murders from 1986-1991. Women are attacked in fields , at night and in the rain and also when a specific song is on the radio. The writers take liberties but it doesn't harm the film like it did in 1968's "the Boston Strangler'.
A Korean answer to 'Se7en' is now I described this to a friend.
The powerful score is at full effect. The build up . Strike. Then relief.
It's hard to go into it without leaving spoilers and I'd advise to go in fresh.
Be blown away like I was. Of course go subtitles not the horrible overdubs. 9/10.
Breaking Away (1979)
Sometimes there are films that take you by surprise
I saw that 'Breaking Away' was nominated for Best picture in 1979. Directed by Peter Yates. It had a measly 16000 ratings. I thought I'd give it a viewing just to tick off the remaining film of that years nominees . Man, was I impressed!!
A cast of 4 misfits who just want to see their home town in the rear view mirror but aren't finding avenues for escape.
The gang are called 'cutter's by the others in the town . A derogatory term .
Daniel Stern , Dennis Quaid , Jackie Earle Haley and Dennis Chrisopher are the boys going through the same things and feelings we all do at the vital age.
The themes of escape and development into adulthood are the ones you relate to.
You find yourself on the boys sides and you pine for them to succeed.
Dennis Chrisopher is the main character who is the most motivated of the group and is interested in cycling as a way to build a career. His parents don't believe in him but he isn't fussed
He pulls his friends through. He lifts them . He uses his passions to drive the others.
The climax of the film is the bike race in front of all the town. It's effective without ever being a cliche.
The screenwriter won the oscar for best screenplay and I'm not surprised.
Definately a long lost classic. 8/10.
L7: Pretend We're Dead (2016)
Not dead. Alive and well!
I'd been waiting years for this film to be released in my country, A great band from my teens. Not just the greatest girl band of all time but one of the greats . Period. The documentary shows the band through video footage with Donita , Suzi, Jen and Dee talking over the various scenes. I'm glad they went this route instead of the 'talking heads'. It makes the film flow a lot more, Starting from obsurity to playing smaller clubs and then to rock stardom with the breaking of Nirvana's 'Nevermind' the girls document the rise well and then the steep decline after 'The beauty process ' album were they found themselves without a label. They went on a significant hiatus until the power of us fans brought them out and touring again. Finally, I got to see them live in 2016. I had to purchase from overseas as it's hard to obtain but it's worth every cent. Not just for L7 fans
Interstellar (2014)
Rage against the dying of the light.
I find it hard to articulate how powerful this film is and how it effects me. Chris Nolan has set the bar higher than he did on 'Inception'. The story is based on probable science , with help from Kip Thorne. The cast is perfect. Matthew McConaughy as the former pilot and everyman' who is battling a desire to do what he is destined to do . Fly an outerspace mission or stay on a dying world and looking after his kids. Nolan regular Michael Caine , Jessica Chastain , Timothee Chalamet and Anne Hathaway round out the main cast. The surprise packet is young Mackenzie Foy who's daughter /father relationship drives the emotional side of the film. The robot TARS was my favourite character in the film. He was the humour and he shows human quality when all seems lost.
Hans Zimmer's score maybe the best he's EVER done! Pulsating and driving and plays on the heart strings like no other score I can remember.
Through the nearly 3 hours I was on the edge of my seat following the crews every move and all the while following the seemingly doomed mankind on earth. It's hard to go into specific parts of the film without spoilers.
I laughed , Cried and cheered with jubilation throughout. An instant 10/10 that gets better on viewing. I can't stress how much I recommend this film. Drop what you're doing!!
The Strangers: Prey at Night (2018)
Avoid like the plague !
Usually films are subjective . This film is an exception. It's a horrible film with no positive elements . The story was non existent , the characters were unbelievable and made the worst decisions I've seen , even by horror standards . The actors were terrible and constantly over acted . The reason the first film had success if because it had suspense . Which of course is necessary in this genre . This had zero . I doubt the director knows the definition of the word . You know when are laughing at the supposed protagonist you know it's a poorly made film . There's no positives to talk about . Avoid !!!
Phantom Thread (2017)
dressed for love .
I was excited as I can be when sitting down to view ' phantom thread ' by the great master Paul Thomas Anderson . I was introduced to his work towards the end of high school with 'boogie nights ' and became a certified PTA fanatic after ' magnolia '. Every film he releases is met with that same anticipation . I turn off phones , shut the blinds , restrict distractions and prepare for an artistic vision of the highest order . Phantom thread is what were come to expect from Anderson . Immaculate scenes set up with precision and grace . Impeccable cinematography . And career defining performances . But to me , the film had me doing something I've done with his work . I looked at my watch mid film . Actually , I did it twice . Does it mean I disliked the film ? It couldn't . As I thought about every element I require in film was ticked off . The story . The story didn't grab me . Not the way it should . I didn't care for the overlong glances with no dialogue . " inherent vice " Anderson's previous film had so much going on . The story and characters flew in every direction . PT was the opposite . It was at a snails pace and that left me not caring for the characters . Daniel day Lewis was dominating the scenes without having to really stretch himself or get out of first gear . I may need to watch again in a month to have another perspective . But a 7/10 . 7.5 if I could . Phantom thread is still better and worthwhile than most other films day and age .
Deliverance (1972)
Where you going city boy ?
What can you say about john Boorman 's 1972 classic that hasn't already been said ? A masterful effort by the director , cinematography and a cast that was perfect on all levels . You will squeal along with the 4 city dwelling men as they take on the wild rapids and the rabid inbred hicks that the river produces . Burt Reynolds is the alpha male in his most iconic role , Jon voight as the Everyman who uses a horrible situation to show what he's made of , Ned Beatty who I'm sure will never want to film on a canoe again and also Ronny cox as the kind banjo playing one of the group . The river is really the unheralded character of this great picture. A film from a time when films didn't rely on Cgi , explosions or car chases . A true classic of cinema .
Kong: Skull Island (2017)
Wow ! What a stinker !
It really puzzles me that the Hollywood machine these days just endlessly churns out this kind of garbage at full stream ahead . I'm just as vexed to why credible actors such as Sam Jackson and john C Reily will allow their names to be attached . Is it just the pay check ? The plot is really non existent . If you like Bad Cgi with no interesting human characters then this may be for you . Anyone the mental age of over 11 will be bored by repeated explosions , car chases , helicopters and an enormous King Kong crashing things . Nearly as bad as the ghostbusters remake .. Nearly!
