Poor Things (2023)

Disappointing
11 January 2024
If you enjoy tons of sex adding anything to the story, and regular old porn just isn't doing it for you anymore- watch this.

However, if you would rather a story be told in which the sex isn't gratuitous and actually has a purpose beyond shocking the audience, it might be best to skip this one.

I don't understand why the only way a woman can be shown "taking her power back" or "coming into her own" is by having her perform a lot of lewd acts. This movie was disappointing & could've been so much more if it hadn't been so focused on force-feeding sex to the audience. The fantastical costumes & scenery were not enough to save it, in my opinion.

Wonderful movie

I wish I could give more than 10 stars. For someone who has had a lifelong deep love for these movies and characters as I have, this movie was a perfect continuation and a beautiful tribute to Harold Ramis. I won't give any spoilers, but the end had me in tears. A truly wonderful, wonderful movie. 😊

Perfect for a fan of the book
25 August 2021
I'm a big fan of Stephen King's books, and many times, the movies that are made from them don't do them justice- nothing can really compare to the mental movie that plays out in my mind as I read the books. However, this comes really close. I love it and everything about it, the casting (even though I'm not really a Dane DeHaan fan & didn't picture his character looking like him, he did a decent job), the music, the set pieces, the atmosphere, everything. I don't even mind that some things were changed. I don't really understand all the low ratings, unless they're all from people who didn't like the book as much as I did.

Horrible
10 June 2021
Bad acting, laughable dialogue, convoluted story that had more holes than Swiss cheese, lack of 80s music on the soundtrack even though this was supposed to be set in 1984, and worst of all- they put off releasing Dune for a whole year after I'd already been waiting to see it for months, in favor of releasing this stinking pile!

2 stars given because I like Kristen Wiig & she did the best she could with what she was given; also because Chris Pine is nice eye candy.

Decent movie
20 February 2020
It was a pretty good movie, slightly humorous, good acting especially from Samara Weaving. I liked that the blood-n-guts wasn't too over the top, but if you have a queasy stomach like I do, be warned that there's a gross vomiting scene near the end.

Bad reboot
20 February 2020
Like most reboots, this one is a poorly executed version of a horror movie I thought was amazing as a kid. Other reviewers have listed all the ways it sucked, from the lame acting to the unnecessary gore, so I won't rehash all of it. I was excited for this because of Mark Hammill voicing Chucky, but even that failed to save this movie.

Don't bother, even if you're high!
20 April 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Not that anyone expects this movie to be another Citizen Kane, but this was honestly one of the dumbest movies that I have ever had the displeasure to see. It was not funny at all, the actors and actresses involved all acted as if they had no experience in front of a camera or like they were acting in a school play, even the ones who usually are able to give a good performance in other projects. I spent the entire movie being embarrassed for the actors involved in this who actually do have acting talent. (I'M DISAPPOINTED IN YOU, MIKE EPPS!!) The storyline was weak and has been done to death already. They say, "You have to be high to enjoy this movie" but I was high as the stars in the sky and it was STILL one of the dumbest movies I've ever seen!! Snoop and Wiz's talents are much more suited to their musical careers, and I think they should both just stick to music. As for Andy Milanakis (or however you spell it), do us all a favor and accept that you are not black, you're not a rapper, you're not a thug are not hard core by any stretch of the imagination. You are a pasty white, chubby, unfunny wannabe and I think you should just give it up already. Please stop taking roles like this. All in all, I gave this movie 2 stars, but really it only deserves 1. I rated it two stars only because it contains nudity and a couple good songs. Unless you enjoy actually feeling your IQ dropping as you sit there, then skip this one.

Not as impressive as it looked in the trailer
6 May 2014
I don't hate this movie, but I don't like it as much as I thought I would. I really like James Franco and his starring in a movie is usually something that will make me give a movie a shot, even if others hated it (Oz the Great & Powerful, for instance). However in this one, I felt his performance was one- note as the goofy, gold-toothed white rapper & drug dealer. Not horrible per se, but just lacking in nuance, which actually might be the fault of the director in the editing room. I've seen Harmony Korine's other movies "Kids" and "Gummo", so those are his only other two movies I can compare it to- IMO it's on the same level as Kids and WAY better than Gummo, both in story composition, scene construction, and performances by the main actresses. The girls all played their characters well, especially Selena Gomez as the appropriately named Faith who just can't reconcile her morals with her friends' concept of "fun". Boobs and butts abound as we go through one wild party scene to another, so if you like seeing jiggling female body parts, you're in for a treat. If not- you might want to find a different movie. 6 out of 10 stars.
