Ripley (2024)
Better than the movie
If you've read the book, you'll likely enjoy this adaptation better than the movie. Andrew Scott is a far more quietly menacing Ripley than Matt Damon ever was, and Dakota Fanning plays Marge better than Gwyneth ever did! I enjoyed Eliot Sumner's Freddy- that was a great performance, as well as other minor characters.
The cinematography was perfection; the location, stunning, production and performances, all beautiful!
Really cannot fault anything about this series, except obviously not being able to utilise the story of Mr Ripley completely, but that's a given in most cases.
Well done to everyone involved, another Netflix hit!
Yijae, Got Jookseummida (2023)
Would have been a 10
I loved this series. Everything about it was really well done. The story was really unique and interesting, and when I really thought about it, it kind of reminded me of a Dogs Purpose, but much darker, and a twisted game.
I loved the lead, he was perfect in his role, but the actor Kim Jihun, is living in his baddie era, and I'm not mad at it.
It was so much fun watching each episode and not knowing who the guest actor would be, so that added an extra element of excitement to the story, but I feel like there was a missed opportunity in the last episode.
SPOILER AHEAD FOR LAST EPISODE
I would have loved to have seen a final showdown between the Yee-Jae and the antagonist (Tae-u), or at least some final closure. I didn't like that he got the last laugh, literally.
Had the final episode not been such a giant bow that nicely wrapped it all up, I would have given the series a 10, which is rare for me to do.
Mysterybox (2023)
Loved it!
As I'm writing this, there's only one other review, which is a shame because this series was such a gem!
I wasn't particularly interested in watching this show at first, but gave it a go and was immediately hooked.
The story is a little slow paced, but it does hold your attention, and after learning about each character, you really come to appreciate the pace, and try to piece together the mystery yourself.
The mystery is not easy to solve, so you won't get bored while trying to figure everything out.
My favourite characters, Yasin and his mother Hala, had such a genuine and caring mother-son relationship that I loved. Amira, Nours mother, was also brilliant, as was Uncle Hasan.
Of course, Yusuf and Nour were also great characters, played really well by their actors.
Overall the show's production, story and acting was really well done!
Ballerina (2023)
Disappointed
Ugh u waited so long for this movie to come out, and I really had high hopes for it, but everything was just so underwhelming.
The story and characters were underdeveloped, the action didn't hit that hard, it should have been longer and time spent developing the characters and story.
I love Jun Jong-seo, she's such an up and comer, and I can see her doing more action in the future, but this was just not it. The production did her dirty.
Kim Ji-hun could have made a really creepy and dangerous villain, but again, not enough time spent developing these characters.
It's not a bad movie by any stretch, but it really could have been rivalling Kill Bill if they just gave it a chance.
The Giza Killer (2023)
Pretty good!
I like horror, gore, crime, thriller, suspense, mystery etc, so it came as a surprise that an Egyptian production could produce such a gritty, crime thriller.
The other reviewers mentioned the inaccuracy of the events, but i'm not familiar with the case, and so I'm watching this with little expectation for truth (although I will be reading up on the case later).
Production value blew me away- the scenes of mûrdèr was quite shocking, even as a seasoned gore fan.
The main character, Ahmed Fahmy, was really scary, in my opinion- his cool demeanour a mask, hiding a psychopath. I love Rakeen Saad since Alrawabi school for girls, she's such a chameleon, and plays this role so well.
Overall, I really do think this production is well written and produced.
Maseukeugeol (2023)
It wasn't bad, but wasn't good
I didn't have any expectations for the series, however, after the first episode I really thought it would be something special- sadly, it wasn't.
The original Kim Mo-mi was well cast, but her transformation afterwards just wasn't believable, in my opinion. I kept wondering why they chose the actress (Nana) who became Kim Mo-mi post-surgery, instead of the actress who played her friend, Kim Chun-Ae. She had very similar bone structure and features and would have been a far better choice in terms of casting Kim Mo-mi.
Other than that, I really felt like the story fell flat after episode 3, and I kept hoping it would pick up, but it just didn't.
As my title suggests, it wasn't a bad show, but it wasn't a good one either.
Secrets & Sisterhood: The Sozahdahs (2023)
If you like drama, they bring the drama
Speaking as a Muslim woman raised in the West, this show is a bit crazy. It's definitely confronting to see Muslim women behaving completely Western and outside what is considered Islamic behaviour, but people need to remember that they're not representative of Islam, they're just Muslims practicing in their own way.
So judgement aside, this is far more entertaining than the Kardashians, and each sister brings an element to the entire group that makes the show work.
I'd like to know more about the elders, a little more on the other relationships (previous marriages etc), and also a little more on how the father was m*rdered. That's just my personal curiosity.
I hope there's a season 2, cause they're definitely an interesting family to watch.
Somebody (2022)
Great premise
Someone rated this a 3, which is insane to me because it certainly doesn't deserve such a low rating simply because it's not that persons "cup of tea".
I'm a huge fan of thrillers, and this one was really well done. The writing was excellent, the performances, top notch, and the cinematography stunning. Even if you didn't like the premise of the show, you must acknowledge that everything else was done well.
Don't pass this show up simply because of one bad review- it's so much better than that.
Watch this, rate it and help change the average score, because this show doesn't deserve a measly 5.7/10.
Moon Knight (2022)
Great start
People giving the show really low votes, wow, who hurt you?
I like my shows fleshed out, given depth, dimension. I'm not eagerly awaiting gratuitous fight scenes simply because it's a comic adaptation in the MCU. Unlike those that have the pilot low ratings, I'll stick to the show and see where the journey takes me.
Oscar Isaac is brilliant. The Egyptian representation in the cast and crew is exciting for me. I really look forward to seeing where this series is going to go. Ignore the 1 star reviews... they're probably DC fans anyway.
