We Live Here: The Midwest (2023)
Queer People Are Good Normal People
A very important documentary before the presidential election in the US: Human Rights for the LGBT Community are decisive and nowadays in danger because of right-radical movements. To watch the testimonies helps to understand that any queer member of our society is as important as any other citizen and they have to be seen and protected.
It'd be great to have a continuation to get to know how the anti gay movement has affected last year these families. Hopefully there will be another solutions besides to move to another state, where the legislation is really open and modern and acknowledges diversity.
Antonio, ihm schmeckt's nicht! (2016)
Very Poor Written
The characters here are not funny or sweet or crazy, they are just annoying. Bad persons lying to their families in absurd situations. The novel "Maria, ihm schmeckt's nicht" is very funny and shows the problematic of one family from Germany meeting another family from Italy. But this continuation has nothing to do with German or Italian traditions. That's here forgotten and the movie is a group of "wanna be funny" scenes. At the end they tried to make an American rom com, loosing on the way the things that made this story lovable on the first part.
The actors who play the couple are good, but such a script couldn't be save by no actor.
Smiley (2022)
Gay Love beyond Grindr
Alex call the wrong number and ends in a blind date with Bruno, who is not his type at all. We get know them and a group of unforgettable characters -specially Xavier and Vero-.
The story follows a group of people in Barcelona, city that always looks stunning on screen. They will be facing some relationship problems during the holidays (Christmas, New Years Eve and Epiphany), and some typical customs for these celebrations in Spain are shown.
Smiley is a heartwarming gay series from Spain, but it's evident it could be liked everywhere. Hopefully we'll get a second season from Netflix, because we watched the 8 episodes already (in just one day :-)
Charlotte Link: Die Betrogene (2018)
It's just not as good as the book (not at all)
While the book has many psychological insights and interesting characters, this movie is full of cliches.
It's really bad how they presented "Kate Linville", the central character on the book, where she is a very shy and not so pretty woman, with a complex dependency relationship with her father. The movie version is a sad femme fatale.
I understand now why Charlotte Link doesn't like the movie adaptations of her works. Hopefully the series of books with "Kate Linville" will get a better treatment in the future.
I wasn't sure if I should see this and believe me you can have a much better time reading her books.
Wunderschön (2022)
Powerful Women
We see the stories of a group of women (different ages, different situations), that has to fight against patriarchal roles and discrimination and for accepting and respect their own bodies and their own necessities.
Karoline Herfurth directs an inspiring movie with the insightful view of a woman, who knows the real every day injustices for women in an unequal society.
The Lost Daughter (2021)
A Portrait of Depression and the Weight of Motherhood
Leda Caruso is a professor and a mother, who precisely carries the weight of her decisions about her career and motherhood. She meets during vacation a young woman that reminds her her own young self and remorse becomes almost unbearable.
The movie is remarkable specially because of the treatment of the complexity being a mother.
Olivia Colman as Leda is great, with a lot of nuances in her acting.
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
All Questions Will Be Answered
I think this movie does justice to the trilogy. There's some meta-story, but in the end the Matrix Universe is the most important thing. And the link between this part and its predecessors is well justified (and every possible question addressed).
I understand some of the hard reviews because of the goofiness of the introduction of the film, but those critics were maybe waiting for a repetition of the original story, and this here is something new.
Hating Peter Tatchell (2021)
A Very Accurate Depiction of An LGBT Activist
If you want to expose and challenge the powerful, you have to expose and challenge yourself. And that's what Peter Tatchell does: he exposes his sexuality, ego, self-righteous, and caring personality to get the attention on decisive problems like discrimination, torture or political tyranny.
The film shows this controversial and inspiring character from different sides and we get to notice how important is to raise our voices against injustice, even (and specially) if that demands a lot of bravery from us.
The Unforgivable (2021)
Powerful Acting!
This is a story about exclusion and the difficulty of finding forgiveness in society. Produce by Sandra Bullock, the movie is effective specially because of the acting -Bullock and Viola Davis are really great.
I just found one problem on the script: there's no clear justification for the decision made by Ruth that is the premise of the whole movie.
Procession (2021)
Film as Therapy - Abuse, tragedy and recovery through art
This documentary tells the stories of a group of men that survived sexual abused when they were children. Although we could have heard about this topic a lot, this movie tries to focus on the power of telling (filming) our own stories as therapy: maybe they aren't actors or screenwriters but you can see their pain in each scene that is represented.
While clearly pointing out the crimes of the Catholic Church, I specially liked how respectful (and beautiful) the narration of the film was.
Maid: Sky Blue (2021)
There's Beauty Everywhere...
This show was a big surprise... I thought it was just a drama series, but it has great cinematography, great actors and a very inspiring story.
But the thing I like the most it's how it shows you that you can find happiness and beauty everywhere, even in the most desperate situations.
Bravo!
Hypnotic (2021)
Hypnotic but no mysterious at all
The story of this movie could be intriguing, specially because no-one knows what they were doing while they were hypnotized. But it isn't. You just know from the beginning what is happening. No mysterious at all.
It's nice to see Kate Siegel as the central character anyway.
Dune (2021)
Again the myth of the chosen one with great FX
If you survive the first 30 minutes of grandiloquent dialogues, you'll get to watch a good movie with a lot of great FX and action sequences.
It's called "Dune: Part One" and it seems there will be a trilogy.
On the Verge (2021)
"Workin' Moms" France/USA Version
A very nice and funny series about a group of friends, that -all of them- have problems with their jobs and terrible husbands. A comparison with the Canadian "Workin' Moms" is inevitable, but "On The Verge" tends to exaggerate a lot more the awkward and funny situations (maybe sometimes a bit too much). In any case both series are worth a watch.
The acting and chemistry between the actresses are great. Waiting already for a second season.
