The Fall Guy (2024)
Two movies in one...
Although it's the same movie in both cases there's a clear distinction in qualities between the two. Whenever we see Ryan on screen (alone), there's this great entertainment and action movie which keeps our attention and makes us want to see more.
Then his love interest shows up and whole thing stalls to a crawl with some fake attempt at making chemistry. They always talk in allegories and act as if there is sexual tension between them but she can't pull this off even if her life depended on it.
Then movie returns, as if by switch, to Ryan and his part of the story and tempo picks up as if nothing boring happened.
Salinui chueok (2003)
It's a nothing movie...
This movie is hard for me to review, because in essence it's not a movie at all. It's a collage of events ordered chronologically. While thing just flows and never gets a conclusion. It's as if you've got to see few months of someone's life, except only highlights.
I can't say I liked it. Technically it was well done. Actors did their job marvelously, cinematography and sound design were great. The story seems absent for the most part, or at least devoid of logic. Number of women gets killed and everyone behave as if nothing happened. Locals keep wandering alone during rainy nights. As if nothing really happened previous number of times.
Cops in this story are inept to say the least. But I guess that's the justification for poor results.
Miracle Workers (2019)
Misleading score...
I can honestly say show deserves a better score and only thing that comes to mind is people being offended by the premise or an idea of mocking god. To those, I say grow up. Nothing screams insecurity more than pouting because someone else has a different opinion.
On the other hand I found this show to be a little bit on the nose but it's fun none the less. Humor is a bit predictable and quirky but I love how everything is incorporated in the story. Flashbacks at the beginning are kind of annoying but they are easily ignored.
That said, I love the idea of "it's so stupid it somehow ends up working". Everything else about the show is very well done.
John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)
Not as good as ratings would indicate.
To be honest I didn't like this part of the series. From the moment it starts it's non-stop action with little to no world building, story or character development.
People come in, do something, talk about something very important and then leave never to be seen. And it happens multiple times. It's just thing after thing after thing. And it's always boss above bosses. Another secret thing inside of this secret thing inside of this secret world. It's getting old and annoying.
Chapter 3 was worse than this from entertainment point of view, but not by much. First movie made you feel emotions and it was very well directed. Second was mostly pointless action but both movies had great pacing. Here it's feels like you are trying to sprint with one leg. We are constantly behind on understanding who the hell are these new people that appeared, why is this happening, why now and why the hell no one remember to get bazooka and hunt Wick. Police is not caring for literally hundreds of dead on the streets of Paris, why would rocket launcher be a problem.
Over all it was "meh". It happened, I watched it and will never do so again. Unlike the first movie.
Ad Astra (2019)
True example of just how much director matters
Best example of just how much influence director has over movies and how much good directing matters. This movie has great cinematography, great actors, great special effects and most likely great science advisors and director decided to not use any of that.
Whole premise revolves around poor understanding of physics combined with poor understanding of one should present a story. In addition to poor science understanding movie is filled with religious nonsense and to a degree has a religious undertone.
Problem is, you don't feel this right away. It creeps on you and then you just end disappointed.
Miss Sloane (2016)
Had to write a review of this one...
Serious question(s) to everyone else reviewing this movie. First what did you all take to avoid falling asleep? Second what did you drink to find it so great and entertaining to give it anything above 5 or 6. Also you do realize rating system is not binary. You have more than two choices.
On to the review. Movie is simply put boring. Story is stretched and has pacing issues. Acting is mediocre at best with few notable exceptions. Cinematography is average.
Biggest issue in my opinion were plot conveniences which are so frequent I stopped counting after first hour. Should you watch it? Most likely no, but if you have nothing better to do you should really rewatch something better.
Bad Boys for Life (2020)
Started as a five ended as a waste of time
Friend insisted we watched this movie. He insisted it was a dumb fun action movie. It was dumb all right. The rest of adjectives not so much. At first I thought it was just a dumb Hollywood flick but as it went on my opinion went down. This is not even so bad it's good. This is just bad and hastenly thrown movie. Not worth your time, click, or even reading the title.
Red Sparrow (2018)
Did we watch the same movie?
I honestly don't know what other reviewers are talking about. It seems we watched a different movie. This one doesn't deserve 8, 9 or as some people are giving it 10.
Jennifer's performance was really good. She sold the russian-talking-english accent rather well. Her acting was spot on, if a little bit flat. Cinematography was also good for the most part in terms of shot choices and similar. For me, good things end there. Whole movie we are being fed this idea of USA good, Russia bad. Everything on one side is bright and white, done for the people and out of sheer goodness of their hearts. On the other, bricks are painted black, lamps are red and girls are forced to have sex. There is absolutely no parts of this movie that are not either black or white. There is absolutely not a single character, on the Russian side that is good or even indifferent, save for the main character and her mom who is the driving force for this story. Everyone is evil and exploits everyone, from theater, dancers, nurses, government, police officers, bosses, roommates.
In short, movie is a disgusting blind and one-sided attempt at making a spy movie with some love interest.
Also I found it pretty ironic how director kept showing everyone being evil and wanted to exploit Jennifer's body, while at the same time exploiting Jennifer's body to make people interested in the movie.
In my own opinion current grade of 6.6 suits it rather well.
John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum (2019)
Not bat, but not good either.
I think John Wick series has finally jumped the shark. Story was thin and action scenes overstayed their welcome. Middle of the movie could have easily been cut out and nothing would be amiss.
First two movies had a good balance of believable fights and story. This one is just pure action which starts fast and never lets down. CGI is I feel more obvious than in previous titles as well. So all in all, dumb fun but not even close to first two movies.
Arctic (2018)
Great acting and some cliches...
Acting here is top notch and actors really sold me on idea of people forgotten far away. Even though some parts of the movie feel like time is painfully slow I think that is, at least in part, intentional.
All that said, 3rd act of was so predictable and filled with cliches it made me want to speed through it. There were some holes in the plot as well, but nothing too glaring. All in all, I feel the ending was a missed opportunity and it made otherwise great movie feel unfinished.
To be realistic, though, this is incredibly strong for a first feature film and I hope he keeps making movies and perfecting his directing skills.
Gravity (2013)
If you have any knowledge of astronomy, vacuum or physics avoid this movie
I wouldn't call this movie dreadful but no matter how much I loved the opening scene I couldn't force myself to watch it until the end. That said if you want a Sunday evening flick with good graphics for which your brain can take a hike I guess it can pass.
-- SPOILER AHEAD --
Although when watching movies I do pay attention to details more than I should Gravity doesn't even make an effort in trying to make scenes look realistic. From the beginning things will make you go "huh?", like small debris hitting the shuttle and thus making it spin like crazy as if no one in this crew ever heard of Newton's laws of motion. Deployed parachutes in space or hanging down and slipping while ISS is perfectly in orbit. Frozen bodies in space and so on.
Ninja Assassin (2009)
Ninjas with katanas?
Seriously? Ninjas with katanas? Anyone with basic knowledge about ninjas would find this movie to be an insult. Non-existent trashy story about a guy that gets revenge for his "woman". Classic Hollywood "action" movie. Lot's of bad CGI, dark scenes with whooshing sound added to everything from a scratching head to jumping. At one point you'll think people have at least 50 liters of blood and have body structure like a balloon.
If you are into inaccurate movies with a lot of speedy scenes to cover up lack of acting, bad CGI blood and revenge theme I guess you might like it.
Personally I didn't find it one bit interesting. I enjoy realistic story lines with at least possible physics. Luckily for me, I didn't pay to watch this movie.
