Precious (2009)
A slow-moving, disturbingly depressing film.
I finally got around to watching this film a few days ago, seeing as most of my friends raved about it. i was eager to see what i was expecting to be a heart-wrenching, powerful, life changing story that flowed with a strong story line and well thought out characters...I was horribly disappointed.
This film moved incredibly slow. There was an array of irrelevant scenes that could have easily been cut. I was 30 minutes in and i already wanted to shut it off. I felt as though i had wasted 30 minutes of my life watching Gabourey Sidibe get out of bed, make breakfast, go to school, walk home, eat, bed etc etc. There is the occasional narration by Precious, basically pointing out the blatantly obvious in every scene. It has no flow, no captivating moments, just blah.
The reason i am giving it a 5/10 is for the acting. Mo'Nique who plays Mary, Precious' painfully abusing mother was the star of the show. This transformation was incredible as she was convincing and wickedly good. Gabouret Sidibe did a wonderful job as the 'down-and-out' abused teen. She was believable and carried most of the film well on her own.
I may seem harsh but this film really irked me. It is definitely an acquired taste. If you like to watch depressing, dismally discouraging movies than Precious is the one for you. I however, prefer to walk away from a film, not feeling as though life is hopeless.
Taken (2008)
one of the best action thrillers I've ever seen!
All I've got to say is...Liam Neeson has still got it!
With fast paced action sequences and a genius story-line, Taken does not fault on any aspects. Even more, what makes this film so heart-wrenching is its absolute plausibility that will make you think twice about sending your kids anywhere, even out the front door.
Liam Neeson gives one of his best performances playing the role of Bryan Mills, a retired CIA agent on a 'stop-at-nothing' rampage to find his kidnapped daughter, Kim (Maggie Grace), who is being sold into prostitution.
Taken, beautifully showcases the father/daughter relationship between Neeson and Graces' characters, and you can't help but lovingly sigh at the way Bryon Mills growls, 'I don't know where you are...but if you don't let my daughter go, i will find you, i will kill you' Isn't that just beautiful?
This film will have you past the 'edge-of-your-seat' stage and onto the floor, until the very end.
Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (2012)
A fun loving film for the whole family!
I saw Journey 2 the day of release here in Australia in 3D and was worried that it would be a cringe fest film of hit and miss humor and horrible 3D effects. I was wrong!
Journey 2 links well to Journey to the Center of the Earth without dwelling on it too much and cleverly introducing the new characters into the franchise.
Dwayne Johnson who plays Hank Parsons gives that macho touch as well as some humorous moments to the film, especially with his 'peck pop of love' (ladies, you'll love that one). He gives a fantastic performance and interacts with the other characters well.
Josh Hutcherson reprises his role as Sean Anderson, also giving a wonderful performance. This talented actor did not fault through out the film, no complaints here...he's definitely one to watch out for in 2012.
Michael Cain who plays Sean Anderson's adventurous grandfather connects well with Hutcherson's character, but also completes the action scenes with ease showing us that he's still got it!
Vanessa Hudgens holds up her end surprisingly well as Kailani, aspiring university student and tough girl, giving a decent, solid, performance...no cringe moments on her behalf.
funny man Luis Guzman did not fail as the ignorant but loving father of Kailani (Hudgens). His funny one liners and hilarious actions had me giggling.
As for the 3D effects i was pleasantly surprised! 3D usually makes me as dizzy as ever and i'm always tempted to remove the glasses. Journey 2, however, was cleverly put together so we weren't watching a blurred film full of action 24/7 and when we were watching some action, it was well executed with elements of slow motion.
Journey 2 is such a feel good film. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to watch some adventure. I will happily go see it again and you know its a good film when you want to go back for more!
