The Postman (1997)
one of the greatest comedies ever made
What an extremely laughable post apocalyptic stolen theme movie. I would compare this masterpiece to two other classics of extreme distaste and fun: the first would be beyond thunder dome. Postman does not quite measure up to thunder dome; although the mad max adventure story has it's moments where you are laughing and its not the intended reaction the filmmakers were hoping for- moments of laughing with the filmmakers, or smiling at clever points and the boyish appeal of "two man enter one man leave" help you forgive awkward moments. The Postman however, contains none of these elements. This is where I draw my comparison to a second film. the movie "SHowgirls" starring jesse from saved by the bell, is the only movie i can think of that compares with the postman in its particular brand of humor. Don't allow the layers of clichés to fool you, there is a funny and entertaining film here if you look beneath the surface. the moments that ring the truest are when the music and the dramatic beats build up and the pay off usually has something to do with the heroics of the reformed postal service. This movie clocks in at nearly 3 hours so the moments of extreme humor abound, don't believe all the hype go see postman.-
Garden State (2004)
boohoo
I will hand it to Zach Braff for writing a funny script, however, this movie sucked. Braff is great on scrubs and points together a fine performance in this movie, the problem is that it reminded me a little of Avril Lavigne or Saves the Day. An attempt to seem all emotionally vulnerable and yet still cool. What is it with whiny teenage melodrama(he's 28 with a 17 year-old perspective), this movie provides no challenge to audience, it simply lulls right from the beginning with predictability. A not so subtle attempt of seeming cool by mentioning how the shins changed his life, horrible sappy ending and Natalie portmans horrible acting ruin a funny story. Please, re-watch this all you who where fooled by this one, Spotless mind (Kaufman, GOndry's role made people like it before they even saw it) is similarily overrated but still much better this unoriginal story.
Spellbound (2002)
overrated
Say whatever you want about the "spirit of good american competition" portrayed in this doc, it's still a movie about a spelling bee. I failed to find anything insightful, inspiring or even entertaining minus one spastically ADD spell freak- who speaks binary and makes hilarous facial expressions, this is accomplished while trying to stay focused long enough to spell 25 letter words. I had heard great things so I expected to see something groundbreaking or even interesting, instead I got a whole movie "ABOUT A SPELLING BEE!?" Spellbound resembled something more akin to a long episode of mtv's "true life" than an errol morris work -granted I'm being extra harsh cuz everyone said it was so great.
