The Godfather Part III (1990)
How did this happen?
My wife and I did a Godfather binge - she's never seen any of them and I haven't seen 3 in a long long time.
I just can't imagine how Coppola could put that out. The storyline was ridiculous and a complete mess. The dialogue was amateurish. Great actors could not elevate that garbage. The son of Santino character was horrible - it was like they said "here watch #1 and imitate Santino and later in the movie, copy Michael's mannerisms." The love connection between 1st cousins was constantly cringe worthy. Any why? What did that add to the story? It was never believable. Reusing the same story telling vehicles (wedding, killing all your enemies in one orchestrated move built around an event) feels really lazy and unoriginal. Connie's involvement in the business made no sense. It goes on and on.
How could the same man who created masterpieces present this train-wreck to the world? It's embarrassing and tarnishes his legacy.
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
Aimless
I love Tarantino movies and like Leo and Brad. Looks good. Can't wait.
A quarter of the way in....sometimes you have to give these movies a chance to develop....
Half way in.....wife has fallen asleep.....ok, this has got to be going somewhere, right?
Three quarters finished.....this might not be going anywhere.
Ending....what just happened? That was stupid and it made no sense.
I see people reviewing this movie tying themselves up in knots trying to explain how this was some sort of esoteric masterpiece but seriously, it was just boring.
Aimless. Pointless. Bewildering.
Just because Tarantino is a directorial genius doesn't mean that everything he does is brilliant. Such is the case with this movie.
The Professor and the Madman (2019)
The real deal
Hey, I enjoy a Marvel comics flick or action adventure as much as the next guy but this is a REAL movie watching experience.
The story is amazing, surprising and true! The interest and the tension is created by the characters and relationships. It makes you think and it makes you feel. The acting is superb.
I was surprised to see it on Prime because it's a new movie with big time actors and I haven't heard a peep about it. I can tell you that it's better than most of the Best Picture nominees over the last two years and the acting performances easily rival the winners.
I hope it gets the accolades it deserves.
Brad's Status (2017)
If you need a movie to bring you down.....
Sometimes we're just feeling too good. Too content, too satisfied, too darn happy. If you find yourself in that place and have 90 minutes to kill, Brad's Status could be just what the psychologist ordered. From the opening scene you feel the wet blanket dropped on you and just when you think "OMG, I need a drink", Brad takes you to new depths. There's a fleeting moment when you think that maybe this thing will turn around and Brad will discover and appreciate the true joys of life. Oh yea of little faith. It's a fake out. The credits roll and Brad hopelessness is alive and well. If you're hankering for a truly dreadful experience, Brad's your guy.
The Captive (2014)
What was he thinking?
This one is all on the Director. I don't know what he was trying to accomplish but it failed miserably. The basic outline of the story showed a lot of promise but it never came together. Its funny that one of the reoccurring lines in the dialog between the father and daughter focused on the word "gimmick" because it seemed as if the director tried to fit every story telling gimmick he could think of into this film. The result is a horribly told story. Constantly confusing. Disjointed. Lacking any depth - you couldn't connect with any of the characters. The story had no pace. You spend your time trying to figure out what's going on....then asking yourself, why did they do that...and then constantly hoping they can manage to pull their stuff together, only to be disappointed in the end. The actors were a talented group. I can't imagine how frustrating it must have been for them being stuck in this slow motion train wreck.
3 Days to Kill (2014)
Incredibly awful
When the opening scene introduced the bad guys as "the Wolf" and "the Albino" and the super spy assigned to catch them looked like she would need a fake ID to get into a bar, I thought uh oh, this can't be good. I mean seriously, the Albino? The whole movie is one cliché after another set up with awkward dialog and nonsensical plot lines. I wish I could say that they were trying to make a campy, tongue in cheek play on the stereotypical 007 spy genre but it didn't come off as that at all. There's nothing worse that a movie that succeeded in being satirical without that intent. It's so depressing to see Kevin Costner sink to such depths.
