First of all: this is a beautiful and gripping movie which is definitely worth (almost must) to see. (But it was released on 25th on December here in Hungary, not on 11th!)
This is something which is called ART -in every detail. The director, the actors (they were GREAT in the supporter roles also! especially Jack Thompson and David Wenham), the screenwriter, the camera men, the photographer etc. put their best and hearts into this movie. It's set up as the good, old epics and guide you and your soul gently through the plot. The constantly up and downs and mini-catharses give you a big catharsis in the end. Like in the classic, antique dramas. Really rare nowadays.
I'm afraid there will be made less and less movie like this in the future, because it cost an arm and that's why it's very-very hard to reach any profit. And the other reason is that lots of people won't understand these type of films, books etc. because it demand some familiarity with the literature, arts and culture. Not so much but enough that you have eyes and ears for the nuances, to be able to "read between the lines", understand the symbols, metaphor's etc. The schools demand a VERY little in this field and the kids turn to the "easy" films and books, which doesn't require much effort or any use of their brain. The impact of this process can be seen on some of the critics. It's unbelievable how many people don't even understand what is this movie about. It's OK, if you don't like it, but first you should understand something of it. But luckily most of the world get it.
In the theater where I could watch this movie, the PEOPLE STARTED TO APPLOUD in the end which is very-very-very rare here.
It would be a shame if these type of films would disappear. "Australia" wonderfully teach and show us that you have to work and fight constantly for your happiness, the love and the loved ones, as these are the most important things in the world and that the people should live in harmony with the nature, which has far more power, than the little human beings ever have. The movie pictures beautifully this harmony and mutual dependence.
Thank you for the Australia, which is not flawless, but almost. And it's very human.
