The Dark Pictures: The Devil in Me (2022)
A promising foundation, but a lackluster delivery at best
I have played many Supermassive Games from Until Dawn, to each of the Dark Pictures Anthology installments.
Until Dawn was a supremely fantastic game that I wish I could play over again for the first time. However, what I've noticed about this Anthology series, is that they seem to know how to build up a story and world, but then they fumble with the actual delivery, and most especially the ending.
This, on top of clunky mechanics, several bugs that shouldn't exist in a $40 game, and wonky graphics, makes for a frustrating experience.
The characters for each of these games are generally wooden or plain unlovable and I always find myself not truly caring if they live or die in the end.
The Devil in Me didn't feel like it had any really "high stakes" moments like other games from Supermassive. The game also just sort of... Ended suddenly out of nowhere, and it fell flat, never really reaching a true crescendo.
I love horror games, and this one had the potential to garner the right experience with the setting and the premise alone, and so I'm very disappointed by how dull and bland I feel after finishing it.
Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities (2022)
I don't understand the 8.1 rating...
I am a self proclaimed horror fanatic. I was so excited for this show. It had such promise from the previews, especially with so many stellar actors being involved. That being said, I am so confused and disturbed by the good rating this show has garnered.
I've watched 7 of the 8 episodes, waiting and hoping for them each to get better, and none of them have. These aren't scary stories, they're not even entertaining stories. They're weird or macabre for the sake of shock factor, at the most. They're gross and uninteresting, and often times, they provide little to no explanation for what's going on at all. Episode 7 pushed me over the edge. Absolutely nothing happened until the last 10 minutes, and then what did happen, was so ridiculous it was absolutely laughable.
I appreciate scary. I even appreciate weird. But these stories? This show? It's boring, predictable, laughable, and disgusting. No real plots, mediocre acting, and only just appealing visually at times.
There's no horror involved. And don't get me started on how unlikable literally every single character is. I haven't rooted for a single one of them.
Do yourself a favor and find real horror to entertain yourself with, because this show isn't it.
