Shazam! (2019)
Fun, Entertaining Movie. Top 2 DCEU Movie!
Now it's not hard to be better than Batman v Superman, Justice League or Aquaman, but when a system / creative process continues to put out bad products, it can be hard to break out of that mold. Luckily for DC and fans, Shazam! is able to break the mold. Unlike most DC films of late, Shazam! is not a film that takes itself too seriously. The movie is able to capitalize on its young stars to inject much needed humor and perspective to DC's film franchise.
While the movie can seem surface level at times, and even cheesy, Billy Batson's adoptive family, as the centerpiece of the emotional world of the film provides a sense of innocence and discovery that you don't really get often. While the movie is perfect, it is able to be funny, fun and entertaining from start to finish. Ultimately I compare this movie to Ant-Man of the MCU: The movie won't win any awards, and it wont be in anyone's top 5. But you will watch it when its on and you will enjoy yourself. For the MCU that might be underachieving. For DC... It's a real home run.
Aquaman (2018)
It's just... really bad.
I am a fan of MCU & DCEU who favors DC comics (not movies) over Marvel. But let's be real: This movie is objectively bad. The visuals are pretty neat, Momoa is likeable and Manta with his suit is pretty sweet. This however cannot outweigh the ATROCIOUS writing, poor directing, bad directing and poor acting.
One thing at a time: the writing is so lazy, there is no explanation of character relationships (specifically Willem Dafoe & Momoa), the lore is hastly given, and the super hero cliches are bad. This is all on top of THE WORST written script I have ever experienced. Every line of dialogue explained everything that was going on very blatantly. That's not how dialogue works! Additionally there was absolutely zero character development.
Basically everyone outside of Momoa and Herd should be replaced in this movie. The movie was littered with actors who stood out like a sore thumb. Herd was pretty bad too but I have a little faith.
In essence the movie is reminiscent of Green Lantern: neat visuals, likeable leading actors and a cool, promising secondary villain, and an overall trainwreck.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
This is not a perfect movie!
This is not a perfect movie, but it sure is fun!I would give this a 7.5 if I could use decimals, but one issue at a time. The biggest flaw this movie suffers from is lack of planning on the studio's part: The superhero movement is coming to a close, we have a few years but it is inevitable. In 2008 Marvel set up an entire world with Iron Man, DC had platform which was as good (if not better) to springboard off of with TDK trilogy but sadly Bale had chose not to go on. So now with time against them DC has to play catch-up. Now too the movie itself: Jessie Eisenberg notwithstanding (I am withholding judgment for now), this movie is BRILLIANTLY cast. Ben and Henry were perfect for the roles (even if Superman still leaves something to be desired).
For the first 2/3rds of the movie the plot is very Political Thriller style with Scoot McNairy and Holly Hunter playing brilliant parts, albeit short lived. Very much in a Winter Soldier fashion this movie was exciting, mysterious, with a very Snydery tone (which I personally like, I like the blue lighting). Up until the Courthouse explosion. From that scene things picked up and Snyder crammed a lot into the rest of the movie: It all works! However it is not the most elegant way of presenting it and my argument is that Snyder needed to fit in a lot to set up the rest of the movies. There is a lot to be explained in this movie, and there are things people don't like, as it was with Man of Steel, HOWEVER many of the question marks left behind by MOS are picked up in this movie, so I wait excitedly for the next step in the story to have these things more perfectly tied up.
This movie is LONG but honestly it should have been longer, in order to fit in all the things Snyder wanted or was told to put in... Look for a VERY long directors cut to really get the best version of this movie. In short this is not perfect but if you like the characters, enjoy movies it is pretty easy to gloss over some things and still really enjoy this movie.
Interstellar (2014)
My New Favorite Movie
Nolan was asked in an interview what he wanted viewers to get from this movie when it was all said and done and he answered he wants the viewer to feel like they went on the adventure with the characters. This is exactly how you feel. You feel like you've come back from space when the credits begin to roll. The movie is 3 hours of never ending awe inspiring twists and turns, making you feel every emotion possible all in one movie (along with a lot of Mind F***ing). Matthew McConaughey is a heart warming character that you root for the entire film. The movie is perfectly acted. Though I wont be surprised if it doesn't win an awards for its acting (It's no Heath Ledger Joker acting, but what is?), it's plot, characters and special effects are what makes you love the movie. This is just another film that proves Nolan's directing skills and the Nolan brothers' writing GENIUS is beyond reproach. I can't speak more highly of this film I loved every second of it and every second is better than the last in this film.
