The Dreamers (2003)
Nice movie
I just saw this movie and when i got out of the cinema i was thrilled, for me this movie is great, but i have my reasons.
One could describe it just by saying: A french brother and sister couple meet an American boy in the middle of the Paris student movement and discover their sexuality...sounds kinda boring to me.
But...First of all, it does not show Paris '68 as a full, it is not a documentary on the political movement of the time, but it shows how students where not just involved but they were captivated, by the movement, it is not just about being in the streets, it is a mental state. Shows the cultural differences on Americans (always pleasing and showing a "nice" attitude) and french (always fighting and being nihilists and argumentative) which is a very fun side. I have to say that the soundtrack is all about my taste, Janis Joplin, The Doors... wow.
Acting is good, i cant say great but let me tell you that the story has a force in itself, all the sexual tension going around in every direction keeps your attention full time. The nude scenes are part of it but what goes around them and the way the twins play this strange games it's so interesting.
As it is usual on Bertolucci's films photography is great and lighting functions very neat. Check out the scene in the bathtub and the 3piece-mirror.
IT is a movie one should see as a document of an era, sexual libertine was part of what was set in movement in the sixties, it is a parallelism between political idealism and moral positions towards sexuality.
En la ciudad sin límites (2002)
Not bad at all
I saw this movie by chance on a cable channel so i had no previous info about it. That's nice because there are no expectations, and the story kinda flows that way, it seems to be, at the beginning, a movie about a dying man, father of the central family and some trouble about money starts to pop, but the delusions of the sick father then begin to take importance, an enigma is brought to the ongoing lives of the family. Then movie starts turning around as some truths come up and finally a very unexpected ending. Thought it is a very slow an moody picture it has a nice rhythm, novelesque type. Acting is good specially by the leading roles (The father (Max) and his son (Victor). Music's really good and adequate for each scene. Some of this actors appear in some Almodovar films so it's a good casting i guess.
Lick the Star (1998)
A nice experimental piece, i think
On my opinion this short film is very representative of it's time and depicts clearly a state of mind in which the characters are. Acting and photography may look nahive o little elaborated but i think it's very well blended in this particular style of filmmaking.
Sofia Coppola has a very unique style which is proved by her following, "The virgin's Suicides". Seems to me that it's almost a documentary, always an up close view of whats going on. It's not only the story, but how is told, and Coppola has a great personal, intimate style that i feel as being a truly femenine capacity, to tell stories not only with action but by declaring mood stages, contextual plots and settings to make the story much more credible.
I really enjoyed this short piece, i saw it before the "virgin's..." so I strongly recommend to watch this film to see a less "pinky-tender" side of Coppola.
