The Mikado (1967)
Boring and lifeless
The Mikado is a great operetta, but unfortunately this film does not do it justice. Nearly everyone's performances were stiff and lifeless. Philip Potter's acting (or lack thereof) was particularly dull - he appeared to be half asleep for the entire film. The faux-Japanese makeup, wigs, costumes, and props are obviously inaccurate and offensive. Most of the choreography consisted of simply opening and closing fans, which got boring very quickly.
There are a few redeeming aspects. The singing was generally good. John Reed was entertaining. But on the whole, the film is boring, outdated, and uninspired.
The Captive (2014)
Boring
The awkward script, slow pace, and bad acting ruined what could have been a good story.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016)
A great movie with wonderful characters! But too dark for kids
The beasts are fantastic, and the human characters are too. Newt Scamander is not your typical Hollywood hero, but he's become one of my favourite movie characters of all time. The other main characters are also delightful. Dan Fogler's character is hilarious.
This movie is clearly aimed at long-time Harry Potter fans, but casual fans of the series will enjoy it too. That being said, it is not for children. I was surprised at how dark and disturbing some scenes were. It's rated PG-13 for a reason.
Edgar Allan Poe's Murder Mystery Dinner Party (2016)
Wonderful acting
A lively, hilarious story about a Murder Mystery Invite Only Casual Dinner Party/Gala For Friends Potluck gone horribly wrong. The setting and acting are particularly inspired. Famous historical authors come to life (only to die again) with hilarious interpretations by Sinead Persaud, Joey Richter, Mary Kate Wiles, and Blake Silver. Tom DeTrinis' acting was phenomenal. Every episode, I thought he couldn't possibly get any funnier, and every episode he did just that.
If you enjoy classic literature and goofy comedy, this show is for you.
Turbo (2013)
Completely unoriginal
Turbo is one of the worst movies I have ever watched. The plot line was extremely shallow and cliché, with virtually every element stolen from other kids movies – from the line "there's nothing in the rules that says a snail can't enter the race" (Air Bud came to mind immediately) to the extremely predictable ending ripped right out of the much better movie Cars. What's even more sad is that the makers of the movie didn't even try to make anything in the movie the least bit believable. Yes, we all know that getting sucked into a car engine cannot give you superpowers, but they could have at least made an effort to make it seem a tiny bit realistic.
However, perhaps the most disturbing thing about the movie was how far the writers took the "believe in yourself and anything is possible" fad, which is prevalent in every modern kids movie, but completely over-the-top in Turbo.
The only two positive things I can say about the film are the good animation (Dreamworks always has excellent animation) and two or three funny one-liners. But they don't make up for the overall terribleness of the movie.
