Human Traffic (1999)
overly flashy portrayal of Brit club scene but accurate
i rate this film 9 out of 10 because it is a highly accurate portrayal of this British club scene of the 90's. it also does a pretty good job of not totally glamorising drugs, a little like trainspotting.
the problem i had with this film is what other people have mentioned about the over use of flashy camera techniques in order to help you connect with the feelings the characters are experiencing whilst on drugs. I felt that although this technique did work it still flet a little like you were in an overly bright disco with the disco ball revolving round and round! I also cant believe what other people have said about Danny Dyers character and his quality of acting i thought he was amazing in this film and the character was spot on, everyone has a mate like that and he did a really good character portrayal.
anyway good film all in all and so incredibly British you have to love, sorry about my typing but the keyboards in Bolivian internet cafés are not the best!
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)
why oh why
why oh why did they they decide to make a wonderfully entertaining and magic set of books into too short, badly acted feature films. I, myself love the books; the way that Rowling manages to create a completely enthralling world of magic and mystery's through the eyes of a young boy, but the films- although they are mildly amusing they are completely ruined by the need to constantly compare them to the books. i realize this is going to be a problem with any book transformed into a film (just look at Alex Garland's The Beach) but its just made even worse by the knowledge that Rowlings books get even longer and the hope that they won't continue to try and fit them all into the regulation 2 1/2 hours. having said all that i do think that this film is the best of the bunch, the new angsty/dark style of Alfonso Cauron make the films more 'realistic' if you can use that word for a wizarding film! The renowned director of Y Tu Mama Tambien really makes his mark on main stream cinema with this sure to be summer blockbuster!
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
le meilleur!
Without dissolving into French, this film is definitely the best of the LOTR bunch, whilst the others either lacked the human element or the action element this film manages to successfully blend the two to create a film suitable (for once) for females, males and children. Whilst the highly artistic and impressive set pieces and action sequences still exist for the filmic amongst us there is still a lot of humanity between the characters that draws even the most anti-LOTR viewer into a story that trips and curls its way through the abandon of middle earth whilst interspersing this with the various sets of characters that we, the viewer, have met in our journey through the 3 books. good film!
The Full Monty (1997)
good study aid!
i am curently studying this film for A level media studies and would just like to say how great it is for this use..if you have to do case studies etc on gender representation this is the film for you. the film deals with a lot of role reversal between the men and women as the men have lost their jobs and arn't active 'men' anymore, showing in many scenes how the women have the power (eg mandy and jean both offer to get dave and gaz jobs where they work) that infact their only way of proving their sexuality/masculinity is to strip off! well as i have to say more because of the 10 line minimum i will now say that the music score of the film is the best thing about it (and it won a oscar), especially the retro music used in many scenes, showing how they are stuck in the past (when they had jobs-gerad never tells his wife)
Two Thousand Acres of Sky (2001)
quite good, with the emphasis on quite!
i thought this tv series was actually quite good but as other people have said, you do get a bit fixated on whether kenny and abby will get together. agian they used the same formula of the quaint scottish isle, with beautiful scenery to lure viewers in, but unlike normal little isles, this one seems to have a thriving youth community; even with a couple of greb types thrown in for good measure! overall quite an enjoyable little thing to watch if its on..although they did position it on a friday night so i have no idea what ther target audience was suposed to be!!?!
