Get Carter (1971)
best British movie ever?
Better than The Third Man, for my money, which is usually put forward as best UK film ever, and probably the best gangster movie in England ever. It's really a film noir in the vein of The Big Combo or The Big Heat, and Hodges uses Boorman's Point Blank as his template for this adaptation of the book - but never gets as existential as that movie. It's got '60's hipness, a few slightly dodgy/unconvincing accents, but a reaL nasty nihilism that sets it apart from other movies - even The Long Good Friday. Caine is unique and carries the film as well as a Dick Hammer or Philip Marlowe played by a Hollywood heavyweight. It's brilliant - see it!
Give and Take, and Take (2003)
engaging low budget charm
This film has a lovely low-budget gritty charm that is quite irresistible - u gotta like the film as a whole. The leads are very engaging for unknowns actors. The only qualm I have is for the lack of juicy meat the female roles have! Otherwise an interesting film. I am intrigued by the makers of the film - Troubled Children Films - someone give them a contract, they seem weird, cool and cutting edge from their website. The people whose reviews precede this one are being too harsh methinks...they should wise up and recognise talent even in its rawest form...! Those are my two cents! RR
