I absolutely cannot express just how much I love this movie. The plot is refreshingly original, the characters are likeable and fully thought out, the writing is witty and intelligent, and it's just so much fun to watch. I adore horror movies that are so meta and self-aware to the point of being almost satirical (Scream and The Cabin in the Woods are the obvious examples here) and Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon truly succeeds. It's incredibly smart, wholly unique, and completely entertaining.

While I didn't find the movie to be at all scary or even that much of a thriller, I can't say I didn't enjoy it all the same. Good or bad, I do love a fun dark comedy. The movie did start out a tad slow and most others would say that it didn't really pick up until the first death, but for me, I was hooked the moment the party guests actually arrived. I would have liked the movie a whole lot more if the creators had given us some background on the party guests. I was far more interested in learning about them and it was a little disappointing that the writer/director didn't focus more on the specifics/details of each character. I just want a movie about them. But I did enjoy the movie, even though the only interesting characters seemed to be somewhat hollow.
