The Mighty (1998)
Cute and heartwarming, yet deep
I read the book that this movie is based on in English class and we were required to watch the movie. Well, I missed a lot of class and ended up seeing only bits and pieces of the movie. Well, I just had to see the movie in full, because I liked the book so much, so I rented it.
What can I say? I LOVED IT! Kieran Culkin was outstanding, as was Elden Henson. Ah, heck, everybody in this film was outstanding. The only complaint I have is that I felt that the death scene wasn't dramatic enough. I cry a lot in movies, even when no one dies, and this was probably the only movie involving death in which I DIDN'T cry. All in all, though, this was just so great. See it. It's one of the best movies I've seen in my life and it takes a lot to impress me.
A true 9.5/10 film.
Saturday Night Live 25 (1999)
Hysterical--could watch it again and again
Okay, I'm a huge fan of SNL and have been for almost three years. I bought this at my local bookstore in February 2004. I paid a hunk of cash for it too, but it was totally worth it.
It is consistently funny from beginning to end. I have probably watched it all the way through somewhere around 10 times. And I never tire of it.
I was only born in 1990 and they never reran SNLs from 1975-1980, which I had heard were the best. It was great seeing some of those sketches, even if they were shown in 30-second chunks. I'm glad that they put "Chippendale's" and "Chopping Broccoli" on there...the special wouldn't have been complete without them!
My only complaint is that it could've used a Tonto, Tarzan, and Frankenstein sketch. I have heard that those are hilariously funny and I've been dying to see one for a long time now.
Jingle All the Way (1996)
Cute and lighthearted
I am 13 years old and a big fan of "Saturday Night Live", especially the reruns (which, sadly, are not on anymore). Phil Hartman has always been one of my favorite cast members and I had heard about this movie that he acted in from several people. My friend owns it, so we decided to watch it one night. I was five when it came out, and I bet a lot of five-year-olds saw it at the theater, but I just didn't.
I had heard bad things about this movie. Some critic said that they just threw a few big names on the cast list and made a mediocre movie out of it (or something to that degree). I admit that I did think that a movie involving Phil, Arnold, and Sinbad would be weird since the three are nothing alike.
So, as my friend and I sat down to watch it, within the first five minutes, I saw that there was some good adult humor in the flick and that it wasn't just for kids. The movie was a little cheesy in certain parts but I did cry at the end at the parade (don't ask why...I'm such a baby!)
All in all, it was cute but very funny. I don't think this movie would've been very good without Sinbad. That man is hilarious. What ever happened to him? Also, it sort of reminded me of "The Santa Clause". The whole film was funny and enjoyable for someone of my age but it still brought me back to my childhood somewhat.
If you get the chance, you should watch this.
