Clash of the Titans (2010)
Crash of the Titans
The trailers for this film made me bubble with eagerness and excitement for what looked to be an excellent movie.
I don't trust trailers anymore.
What a ripoff! The special effects are murky, the acting boring, and the plot about as uneven as Nicolas Cage's recent acting record as compared to ten years ago. Now that's pretty uneven. I wanted to care when a character would get impaled on a scorpion's stinger, but I found myself incapable of feeling for characters we had no relation to or understanding of. The only reason I would ever care if some Greek dude got obliterated would be if he had a cool hairdo. Rewrite the screenplay so as to be free of campyness (to an extent of course) and give me a character that I can be sympathetic for, not some snotty demigod. Get a grip. If you have a Friday night to kill, try "Gladiator", "300", or Lord of the Rings. Skip this mess.
The King's Speech (2010)
A Strong Film With Exceptional Performances
Let me get this straight: "The King's Speech" was not the best movie of 2010. However, it is still a strong picture that is well worth your time.
The strongest and most fulfilling aspect of "The King's Speech" is the performances. Colin Firth has the showcase role of the stammering King of England, and he totally owns it. I cannot recall seeing a better performance in any other 2010 movie. That said, Helena Bonham Carter is strong also, and Geoffery Rush is enigmatic and charming as the King's speech therapist. The minor parts are also acted with energy and pizazz, for a period film. I remember watching a familiar face that I did not expect to see pop up on the screen, and yelling "Hey look! It's Dumbledore!" As you probably have guessed, Michael Gambon has a role.
"The King's Speech is not as memorable or emotional as I had heard and therefore anticipated, yet the whole experience does have an impact and although you won't likely remember it with burning passion, you will certainly not forget it. The screenplay is smart, the actors have smooth chemistry, and the performances are outstanding. I recommend this film.
A Beautiful Mind (2001)
A Beautiful Mind is a Beautiful Movie
Upon concluding my viewing of "A Beautiful Mind" I stood up and clapped with tears in my eyes. Granted, it was late at night and good movies do tend to have a dramatic affect on me, but I thoroughly enjoyed the film.
I wish I could divulge information about the plot, but there is quite little one can say without ruining the story, and therefore the viewing experience. "A Beautiful Mind" is a universally very strong film, especially in the acting department. Jennifer Connelly was excellent in an academy award winning role, and Russel Crowe gave a powerful and inspirational performance as the lead character, who spends the film dealing with drastic changes to his life and world.
"A Beautiful Mind" is easily one of my favorite movies of all time and certainly won Best Picture for justifiable reason. I hope that it continues to be treasured as an optimistic and satisfying perspective on life, love and the pursuit of happiness. Watch this film, and if you don't love it, then I marvel at how perspective on this magnificent piece of cinema can be so estranged.
