The Black Phone (2021)
Good Horror
This was a great and fun horror movie to watch in the cinema with plenty of jump scares that weren't over the top. I would recommend that you don't watch any trailers beforehand as they give too much away.
Hotel Transylvania (2012)
It's okay
I watched it as I wanted to watch a good animated movie. It's good for children, perhaps not so much for adults. Missing something. It started to get a bit better as Dracula went out into the real world- wish there was a bit more of that!
Only You (2018)
Okay
It's an okay movie. Felt very slow, a bit cringey, forced and questionable at times. Wouldn't really recommend. It was actually a bit dry and boring. The characters didn't have much depth to them other than wanting desperately to have a child together.
Whiplash (2014)
Difficult to watch and comprehend
The acting was good, it had potential...but it was TOO much. The teacher pushed the boundaries beyond normality. The teacher was abusive, manipulative, narcissistic and incredibly unhealthy. The teacher was toxic, position of power to control and scare young students into complete submission and fear through violence and verbal abuse.
The epitome of toxic.
I was hoping it would become better towards the end, but the ending was not resolute in any way. I would not watch this movie again. It portrays a toxic and unhealthy version of success and hard work that is violent. No one should aim for this or put this kind of behaviour on a pedestal. Other reviewers commenting that this is the type of hard work ethic and motivation that people from the millennial generation are lacking/or in need of, need a serious reality check.
Edie (2017)
Beautiful and inspiring
A simple yet incredibly beautiful and inspiring movie about determination and the power of the human spirit, to achieve what we put our minds to. I really enjoyed this film and the intergenerational friendship between Edith and Jonny. There were many moments in the film, where, as others have stated, the scenes alone conveyed a thousand words and feelings.
Brooklyn (2015)
Beautiful and relatable film
What a beautiful and relatable film, I can relate to it as a relatively young person (26) who has experienced moving to and living in a new country. Whilst the film is set in the 50's, in an era where communication was not as instant as it is today, it speaks of the raw emotions, pain, joy and journey of growth that one goes through when moving to a new place. Eilis - Saoirse Ronan's acting speaks for itself. It is moving and utterly beautiful. I am in awe of the whole movie. It also made me feel and understand what it was like for my parents and other immigrants to move to a new country when letter writing and telephone calls were the main mode of communication, when travel was less frequent and distances were greater, and begin to understand what it must have been like for them to leave lives, parents and families behind to begin a new life in a country they would grow to call home. I love this movie and I will watch it again.
We Are Not Princesses (2018)
Beautiful documentary
I watched this as part of the Celebrating Syria Festival. Beautiful documentary film. There were many points in the film where I had to pause to fully take in and absorb what the women had said - poignant, powerful and moving.
To Rome with Love (2012)
Slightly boring and a little bit of a random story line!
Well, what can I say about this movie! It was so popular that me and my two friends went to see it and apart from us there were only two couples in the entire cinema ...IT WAS EMPTY. This wasn't much of a surprise either! The movie was just too CHEESY!!!Far too cheesy to be exact...too cheesy that it made the movie unbearable to watch! So unbearable that after about 25 minute,s me and my friends made a run*literally* as fast as we could out of the movie theatre. Luckily, we didn't pay for the movie as we got free tickets! If you're planning on going to see the movie...save your money and time and just don't go! The acting all seemed so fake and unreal! At times it felt as though the actors were reading something from a textbook!
