Cold Mountain (2003)
I really enjoyed this...
I know a lot of users have posted in the forums that this was a 'terrible' film. And some of my friends would agree with them.
I, however, truly enjoyed the film. It was one of the few "Civil War Era" films, that I have seen, where slavery wasn't the main storyline. This was a nice change to me.
The acting was good, IMO. And I truly enjoyed Zellweger's performance. She, I felt, made the film. Although I've read much about people that felt Kidman's role was terrible, I didn't feel that way. I rather enjoyed the entire film.
If you're in the mood for a good love story, this may just be the thing.
84 Charing Cross Road (1987)
A true favorite of mine...
Most of my friends would find this film boring. A sad thing, really, because I love films like this.
The 'conversations' between Hanff and Doel are absolutely wonderful, and Bancrofts portrayal was both touching and hilarious. Hopkins' performance is exceptional, as would be expected. And I felt the other characters all had a charm that isn't often shown in films currently made.
If you don't need blood-and-guts ... or major CGI to enjoy a film, give this charmer a try... To me, it's well worth the time invested to watch.
An American Haunting (2005)
I feel more violated than Betsy Bell is portrayed as being...
Okay...
I had such high hopes for this film. Up until a few months ago, I had never heard of the Bell Witch, but I love horror stories, and have always liked Sissy Spacek and Donald Sutherland.
After seeing the trailer, I was excited, and anxious to see the film.
In the time between seeing the trailer (about a month) and seeing the movie tonight, I did read up on some of the legend as accounted in websites etc.
Well, we just got home from the theater and I am getting the feeling that I wasted the time to watch it.
The movie was well shot, the acting was great... and the story, up until the last 5 minutes or so was quite intriguing. No, it didn't follow completely what I had read on the Bell Witch, but being Hollywood, I expected some 'dramatic license.'
*** Spoiler ALERT *** But to have the entire story pan out to be a sexual abuse of the daughter by the father was just too much.
I understand that *crap* like that does happen in real life... and it's a traumatic and shameful thing. But to conclude this story with this "theory" is just plain stupid.
As someone else has posted here... if you know ANYTHING about the Bell Witch legend... DO NOT SEE THIS.. as I would expect anyone to have the same reaction.
Gone, But Not Forgotten (2003)
Definitely Not 'Polished'
I, as a gay man, am happy that there are more and more films, Indie, and Mainstream that are relating too, and telling more 'gay-positive' films.
However, I do wish this film had been done better. I saw that the story had much more potential than what was actually delivered; it was actually quite interesting, and the main reason I did watch it all the way through.
The bad *
The audio was terrible. There were places in the film where the dialog was completely covered by 'really bad' background music.
The writing left a little to be desired and has been compared to an Afterschool Special, with good reason.
The acting was adequate, and this I can't tell if it could have been done better by better dialog in script, or if it was poor delivery from the actors.
The good *
I did feel that the leads, Mark (Matthew Montgomery) and Drew (Aaron Orr)scenes together were done well. They 'pulled off' the intimacy very well, and their interactions were believable. They seemed to have a true chemistry that worked.
As has been stated previously, DO NOT watch this film if you are expecting a lot, as you will most certainly be disappointed. If you have the time to waste... no worries.
As a side note... I would like to see the leads in other roles though, to see if they can do a better job with a 'better script.' I hope this has been a helpful 'review.' -A
