28 Days Haunted (2022)
Watch 28 Days Later Instead
Painful to watch and disappointing. I love this stuff and want to believe in the paranormal but am a skeptic. Having a camera crew around didn't help. They most certainly weren't "alone." Video filters didn't help and half the time I wondered if it was actually night vision or a filter. Why weren't there cameras in every room hooked up to a CCTV system to capture EVERYTHInG? Every "physical manifestation" was so easy to debunk. The cabinet scene conveniently blocked by a counter. The vase that could easily have been attached to a string. The doors slamming. All of it was too easy to explain as non paranormal.
The characters were entertaining, but overall, I expected more. I suppose you need a rather large budget to spend enough time somewhere to see what actually happens. And then it could all be a waste of time and money. But how much of this was manufactured vs paranormal is very hard to tell. I'd love to see someone take this genre to a level that brings some legitimacy to it, assuming it does exist. And if it doesn't, just call fiction, fun, and scary.
I hope to see another attempt, but would love if they'd set up enough cameras and mics in each room, recording at all times, from different angles, to detract from the easy cop outs. Could it have all been legit? Who really knows, but it's hard to believe it was based on how it was all done.
The funniest part for me, was when they are arguing over whether or not the "sensitive" wrote "C U" on the steamed mirror. The focus by the investigatory team is not on the fact they are speaking to spirits in real time, but that the spirits blame the sensitive for writing it on the mirror to try to fake an encounter. It was so ridiculous that these team members are arguing over whether one member fabricated the writing, that the focus drifts to that vs them SPEAKING and getting RESPONSES from those spirits blaming him. I just can't.
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit: In Loco Parentis (2018)
What happened to this show?
Disappointing that they didn't take the opportunity here to show the real consequences of falsely accusing a rapist. The show needs to do something new. Very dissatisfied with the direction it's going. Missed opportunity here. Bring back criminal intent. Stabler new when to leave the show. Good for him.
Mission to Mars (2000)
See it and decide for yourself.
It tells you a lot when you see mostly 10/10 and 1/10 ratings for a particular film. It means it was polarizing. I have to say I'm a bit disappointed in some of my sci-fi counterparts rating this movie a 1/10. Their comments are their own opinion, but to give this film a 1/10 is a pure injustice.
This film provides beautiful scenes, a great cast, and a wonderful refreshing story. We get to see tremendous character building like is rarely seen in other sci-fi films and you truly feel for each character.
Sure, the story isn't always plausible, in fact, at one point one character explicitly responds to another stating that what they are experiencing should be impossible, however, what they are seeing is just that.
This is how story telling should be done in any genre. The musical score helps to add meaning and emotion. At the end of the movie, you feel like you've watched a masterpiece. Left me wanting to know more about what happens to the characters after it ends--but that would ruin what is truly one of the best space sci-fi movies ever made.
Please don't be discouraged by all the 1/10 ratings. I've never actually seen a film that deserved less than a 3/10. See this for yourself. If you are a hardcore sci-fi buff that needs movies to live up to a certain preconceived expectation, then don't bother. If you want to enjoy this for the film that it is, regardless of your genre of choice, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
The Cabin in the Woods (2011)
I don't get it. Most disappointed I've been in awhile.
I have not been this disappointed in a long time. Had I known I was coming to watch a movie that was making fun of horror movies, I wouldn't have wasted my time or money.
Original as it was, it lacked three major things I expected: 1. Horror (which was replaced with comedy) 2. Good Acting (I was sorely disappointed, the characters didn't seem that into their roles) 3. some sort of intelligent story (based on hype and previews)
I felt bad for none of the characters that died. None of the characters really developed throughout the movie. The story was just terrible with too many unanswered questions and the film makers chastised the review groups prior to releasing the film for asking about a sequel.
Some more about the reason that they needed a virgin, jock, whore, fool and scholar would have been nice to know. Why they were sacrificing to the gods could have been more clear. Why they were involving all the other countries would have been nice, but mostly, explain this to me:
Which one of the Asian children in the classroom was the whore? the jock? the fool? I'm assuming at that stage in their lives they were virgins and scholars...
I never found myself startled during the movie, not one jump. I feel cheated that I went to a horror movie to realize it was a poorly done comedy.
I don't get it. I must be wrong. Everybody else seems to disagree with me.
The Darkest Hour (2011)
Decide For Yourself, I loved it!
From the time the trailers came out, this was the movie I had to see. I went the night it came out. Yes, a couple people walked out of the theater (but they had been heavy petting from the beginning).
Anyways, the movie was well thought out. The plot was simple but sufficient. The CGI and special effects were more than adequate. If you like Sci-Fi, you will like this movie.
If there is anything I have learned, it is this: The critics are far too critical, they have made up their minds before they even see a film about what they will rate it. I almost never agree with critics and actually think they harm the film industry and smaller less likely to succeed titles.
Critics have decided that big actors and big directors = good ratings. They have decided that horror, sci-fi, and comedy movies automatically get reduced to a 2 out of 4 stars out of genre alone.
DON'T LISTEN TO CRITICS! Read the reviews here from users. Find one that seems to click with you and match your thinking. And for goodness sake, if you don't like the sci-fi genre, don't be surprised if you don't like this movie, and don't come back and rate it poorly!
I'm sorry, I just don't get the negative treatment here. I went out and bought the DVD.
