Modern Love Chennai: Ninaivo Oru Paravai (2023)
I am so obsessed with this episode
The film is filled with gorgeous visuals and beautiful music and to top that, the story is very interesting.
If you enjoyed Charlie Kaufman's films, this is a must watch as this is like an homage to his style. There is so much beauty and detail in the film that 1 viewing is not sufficient to fully understand it. Don't worry about the story and don't ask others or directors, because there can be multiple interpretations and the one that you come up with is the right one.
My only suggestion to Film lovers is to watch the series in this order 1 2 3 4 5 and then 6.
Because if you plan to watch in reverse order, you might end up like me watching 6 first and then 6 again and then again and again.
Loved it!
Bachchhan Paandey (2022)
Not a proper remake - Jigarthanda vs Bachchan Pandey
First of all, they have changed the gender of protagonist, which is fine. But when the purpose of that is to add romance, it's nonsense.
Bacchan Pandey beats Myra, her friend, bullies her, threatens her and spoils her career, and still she falls in love with him? She sees the angel side of him? It was watchable until the flash back scene about Pinky and Bachchan falling in love with Myra.
This film would have been great, if she tried to take the revenge with her weapon which is the filmmaking skill. That was how Jigarthanda ends on such a great goosebumps climax.
Jigarthanda - protagonist who is a Passionate filmmaker gets once in a lifetime opportunity to make a gangster film. Protagonist gets bullied by this Gangster and he threatens him and his producer with violence to make introduce as hero in his very first him. Protagonist hates him. Protagonist tolerates all of this, until he gives a revenge by showing him as a clown in the film and making it a enjoyable successful film.
BP - Protagonist gets bullied by this Gangster and he threatens her and her producer with violence to make this guy as hero in his very first him.
Protagonist gets to know that Bachchan became violent because of a flashback incident involving his girlfriend. She starts to like him.
She shows her love towards him by making a movie which shows his positive fun side.
The style of the BP was also too silly. There is a scene which screen starts to show video loading screen to mock someone's disability of stammering. You are insulting your own movie, and scenes like this makes the audience lose their connect with the film environment. Just watch the 10 minutes of both the films. So much story happens in BP but you don't get any interest. Whereas in Jigarthanda with very easy simple scenes, you get sucked into something very interesting. Jigarthanda is so good to watch also because of the music which is one of greatest bgms in Tamil cinema. It is called as musical gangster film. Bachchan Pandey keeps repeating same tune continuosly. The way how climax scenes and ending frame shows who is ambitious and serious about filmmaking and who is silly. Better to skip this film and do something else.
Yaaruku Yaaro (2007)
Filmmaking is bad but far better at entertaining than most annoying comedy films!
This is comedy gold. Honestly, I have never seen a film which offers you pure comedy for free, with no obscenity, no profanity or violence. You can watch with family and it's free to watch.
Comedy in Tamil Cinema today = Someone insulting/mocking someone else based on how ugly they look, racism, fat shaming, gender shaming and double meaning. 75% of jokes nowadays are like this and you know that. Here is a film that mocks itself. The actor says go ahead and laugh at how pathetic my acting/dancing is.
(This is a debut film for all technicians except few actors with absolutely no experience. Most of the scenes were taken with single shots as they wanted to finish it ASAP as every minute of their shoot costing them to run out of production money).
Ofcourse the film is intended to be a serious film, but the poor quality and acting will make you sit through the entire film and have fun mocking their mistakes. The makers are fine with viewing like this. Maybe it is like a new genre like a spoof film. There is no reason to get angry, because the makers are not forcing us to watch this, or saying they have made best film of the decade, but they humbly accept they made really mockable art and it is our wish to watch it or not watch it.
Even the most celebrated Tamil directors like Karthik Subbaraj started with low quality short films with bad acting which are even worse than Yaaruku Yaaro. (Check his youtube channel). Stanley Kubrick thought his first film was so bad, that he bought all copies of his first film "Fear and Desire" and destroyed it. In a way, this film would give hope to all new film writers and directors, that they can tell stories better than this, they can act better than this. Without feeling ashamed, go ahead and present your art to the public and embrace the response from audience no matter how bad it is. You have to start some day, and the first work is going to suck and people are going to laugh at that most likely. But that's okay, because most of artists can survive only if they accept that.
A film's aim is to entertain audience at the end of the day. And Yaarukku yaaro is 10/10 in that aspect, because everytime I felt depressed, I watch this film and felt better!
Kaaviya Thalaivan (2014)
"How was Kaaviya Thalaivan?" I can answer by saying 'beautiful', but not, "a very good movie"
Kaaviya thalaivan is a drama about actors who do drama. When you say drama, it contains acting and music. Vasantha balan made his best to bring the best in both departments. Although I was not able to find the Rahman's touch in music, he still did pretty well for the bgm. Siddharth and Prithvi gave one of their best performances till date. Critics blamed Sidhaarth for his role in "Jigarthanda" saying, "He is just roaming around with bewildered look most of the time". And now in his next film , he gave one of the most powerful acting performances. You are supposed to hate Prithvi raj for his role but somehow how i felt Kaaviya thalaivan would have been even nicer if Prithvi played the "Kali" role.
This is the time where short films are evolving on our state. Especially Sidhaarth's last movie "Jigarthanda" which is about a short film director, inspired a lot of youngsters to make short films. I believe in olden days people are just interested in acting and were approaching directors for getting chances. But now, almost everyone knows the technology to make a short film. People are willing to become directors like how they desperately wanted to become an actor.
The short film makers can be influenced in two ways. One is they can see how people suffered to make dramas in the olden days, and feel could about the luxury of having technology in their pocket to take a video and publish to thousand people. The other is to see how Vasanth balan grew into a great director and now who works with Rahman. There are some scenes such as riots which made me wonder like "how did he even make it?!" Apart from small imperfections like lip syncing and logic fails, it looks like a well made movie.
There is no comedy in this film, there is no Santhanam and Suri. There is not much romance in this film. There is no actions, fights. There is plenty of drama, emotions and songs. Mostly this is a film about dangers of one's Jealousy. Well, pretty much the same stuff shown on tamil serials all the time.
I have heard people use to make fun of the people who act in drama saying they act for money. But there is art in that drama, which plays with human emotions. It can make you laugh, it can make you cry, it can make you fear. This film explains you that. I thought it would do more of that. The film was shown as it was set during Indian independence, the actors perform to bring patriotism in viewers minds. This film shows about actors trying to help freedom fighters. I thought the film will do more of that. While the film deviates a little bit and moves towards Independence, suddenly we see that this film is not about independence. What was shown on the climax was very emotional, but illogical, unacceptable, and unfitting. How on earth could he do that?! Rating – 3/5
Vaayai Moodi Pesavum (2014)
Brilliant film after Soodhu Kavvum! Balaji the best director of Modern kollywood Cinema!
I thoroughly enjoyed every scene. Complete satisfaction! This movie does not have proper logic in many parts but still a well written neat film like soodhu kavvum. i was absorbed into the movie. Even though this was humour film, this was a serious story unlike other santhanam films like #KannaLadduThinnaAasaya. This should be a trend setter. Pandiarajan as sundaralingam is so funny after long time especially the mashup scene i was literally LOL. All the characters have a nice part to play and such a beautiful story was written for everyone. I loved the news reader scenes by Balaji Mohan. He himself is a good actor too and extracted nice acting from everyone. As he explains himself, its such a crazy movie! Its worth to watch second time! I wonder if you would still ask for a movie with fight, songs and so on. Please don't go back. There are so many things to enjoy! 5/5.
Balaji has a very good taste to direct films and he took a small step towards Hollywood style. I don't want a Transformers movie here. Transformers is worst film. I want films with nice script. Films such as Eternal sunshine. Thats where we have to look forward. Selvaraghavan's attempts by using serious stories have failed. I hope Balaji would not fail. Great directors like Bala and Mani Ratnam have excellent ability to direct anything. They are very best at how to direct but you can still question if they are good at what to direct. The stories they do still lack the expectations. Balaji looks very promising this being his very second film, he started writing creative scripts.
After watching Maan karate i was so fed up for such a stupid script and was worrying tamil cinema was going down. But after seeing this i am amazed! Those who said Maan karate is better than this movie, Please Vaayai moodavum! Hats off Balaji Mohan Ji! I am soon expecting you to take a film of some other genre soon!
NOTE : YOU WILL BE MEETING MANY REVIEWERS SAYING THIS MOVIE IS CONFUSING. NOT AT ALL! WATCH THIS WITH AN OPEN MIND AND I AM SURE YOU WILL ENJOY IT!!!
Maan Karate (2014)
Warning: Sportsmen especially Boxer fans Do Not Watch this film ever!
Siva the hero Peter doesn't know boxing is a 'sport' and has no interest in sports or boxing even after reaching finals but he still wins championship without even practicing because he is in Love. I don't want to say anything else.
Maan Karate can be a humour film but its such a disrespect to boxing. Being a sportsman the film is more irritating than entertaining to me. How could it possibly happen? A Person who doesn't know what boxing is to reach finals? He goes to the finalist opponent and begs him to lose to him so that he will love Hansika! WORST SCENE EVER!!!! SO Stupid! How much love one would have had to win a championship? Just because the hero peter wants to screw hansika he wants the real Boxer to lose to him, the guy who doesn't know boxing! Please do not try to blow things by keeping LOVE as a medium my dear Kollywood directors. It's true that you want to show hero to be a funny guy, and to be a funny guy he should not be talented, but still why win Championship? THUMBS DOWN for maan karate even though i like Siva!
Paradesi (2013)
suffering, suffering and more suffering
We know about director bala's films. Most of the films will have characters with different appearances and incredible acting. The films concentrate about suffering of a main lead character and people surrounding them and ends with an obvious sad ending.
I was disappointed with "Avan Ivan" and "Naan kadavul" since everything followed the same plot and i expected more. The actors in his films perform so well that their brilliant acting wasn't supported with a nice script. Bala is so talented as a director and he is obviously one of the bests in Kollywood but he needs to write better scripts. Tamil directors need to adapt novels instead of trying to write their own script.
I came to know this "Paradesi" film was said to be based on a novel "Red tea" by Paul harris Daniel. i don't know anything about that book but this film still seems more similar to his previous films. The film is all about sufferings of villagers who are tortured to work for British's tea plantations. All the characters have acted very well especially adharva and his role as hero just like Bala's previous films, stays in our minds even after minutes after the film is over. The setting, environment, camera works and BGM selection all top class showing Bala's capability as a director. I like how his film stays out of usual commercial tamil filmmaking style which doesn't have 5 songs, 5 fights, comedians, and punch dialogues. he takes tamil cinema close to Hollywood style and falls short.
"Paradesi" contains many weird scenes especially my favourite part of the film, where a new doctor comes to cure the coolies suffering from an unknown disease. Adharva will bring his roommate (lady who lives with him on the hut) suffering from illness to this doctors hospital. i expected he would cure her. Instead he suggests them to praise the almighty. Next day he and his white girlfriend starts singing and dancing for a Christian song for Christmas which kind of imitates the devotional songs in many of other tamil films where at the end of the song almighty will create a miracle such as curing a person suffering from sickness. But here, this is Bala's film, devotional Christian song which is nowhere sounding near the ones sang on churches, instead very very hilarious ending with.. the patient herself dying! I wouldn't call it controversial but the reality.
This film is almost close to be called a masterpiece. But it isn't because lacks something.
If Only (2004)
If only ending had been better
If you are a fan of romantic films and if you have a girl friend this is a must watch movie for you. It explains how important it is to spend time with your girl friend. The movie was interesting because of its unique plot which has some mystery till the end and makes us to keep on thinking about what happens next. Was he time traveling? Was that Deja vu? Was that a dream? as we keep on thinking the film becomes a bit dragging in the second half.
I was actually expecting something like Sixth sense or Jacob's ladder in the end but then later found out that i was in wrong film. Jennifer Hewitt picks up a guitar and starts singing a song thinking about his dead husband who sacrificed his life for her. I don't like movies which has sad endings. even if you too are the same, i would still recommend it as it is one time watchable. Jeniffer love Hewitt is so lovely in this film that it makes us fall in love with her. Paul Nicholls has also acted well. None cares about that mystery behind taxi driver till the end.
