The Whale (2022)
A very American movie
Stereotypically speaking this was a very American experience. Not so subtle, a lot of drama and emotions - which is where they got me - points for that. Brandon Fraser and Hang Chau are giving great performances and there are some really witty and fun dialogues.
But the whale/moby dick metaphor ist shoved so hard into your face + all the cheesy talk about essays, truth and honesty in writing was just a little too much Dead Poets Society. At the same time there are way too many side plots to do justice to each one of them. The main plot's dramatic climax is so obvious you can see it coming way before it happens and then - at least to me - the big explanation of how Charlie left his family and needs to save money now for his daughter just didn't make a lot of sense the way they were presented.
The end made me think of Birdman and I can only imagine what an amazing movie this could be if Aronofsky would have committed to this supernatural/imagination style instead of staging it so close to a theatre play.
Jojo Rabbit (2019)
Nazis are funny, aren't they?
I don't think every movie about such severe topics needs to be an intense and serious drama, but Jojo Rabbit is as much of a great movie about Nazi Germany and Anti-Semitism as Driving Miss Daisy, The Blind Side or any other "white guilt" movie are great movies about racism. It's quite sad and says a lot about society that so many people are blinded by slapstick jokes and a charming cast. As a fan of Waititi's work so far, I was very disappointed.
Knives Out (2019)
End out
A great whodunnit with an impressing cast and lots of twists, but unfortunately ending with where it starts off by revealing that the only character who is showing any character development at all turns out being the murderer. Nevertheless, thrilling and very entertaining!
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016)
A Movie Is Not A Book
The good things first: Brilliant cast. Eddie Redmayne is obviously a great actor and also the rest of the cast works out well. Just thinking about Alison Sudol and Dan Fogler, who were such a cute couple on screen. Next thing: great setting in New York showing us the wizard world of another country at another time and I really liked the idea of a Harry Potter movie without Harry Potter. Reason for that is I am not the biggest fan when it comes to the movie adaptations of the novels, because for me they live off the many details, side plots and the daily life in Hogwarts. That's what sucked me into this fantasy world like only few other books were able to and that's what never worked out for me with the movies. So I thought an original story by J. K. Rowling directly written for the media film would do a better job than it actually did in the end. And this is where my citrique starts: to me "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" was not functioning well as a film. It had its lenghts, confusing moments and sadly characters not acting right in the logic of their universe e.g. the use of spells, especially the lack of spells in certain moments. So I guess when J. K. Rowling wrote the scene in which Newt Scamander chases his Niffler in a shop, it seemed to be funny, but to me as a spectator it was just annoying having to watch it for way too long. That's probably the difference in media. In a book I would have read it out of the perspective of Newt and chased the Niffler as him and maybe having the thought afterwards: "Damn, I could have made it a lot easier!", which would be a typical Harry thing by the way. But it's easier to connect to a well written story through one's own fantasy than trough a movie in which I am a spectator and everything I see has to work perfectly and look good to get me involved emotionally. So that's why I guess it would have been a great novel, but it became a mediocre movie with a lot of good and a lot of bad sides. All the great ideas, the actors, the beasts, they just can't mask that the movie is not a round thing. For a long time it was kind of chaotic and hard to see where the whole thing was going with a lot of things happening at once, but when it finally reached the point, where it was obvious how the movie would work things out, it still took too long to finish and I was not able to get into it. So ironically one could say the movies fails to a certain point because of its writers brilliance and lack of ability to function with it in the media film.
The Interview (2014)
Congrats to Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen: You are the new Adam Sandler.
Kim Jong-un is right to be angry about this film, but out of the wrong reason. Not because it's a "most blatant act of terrorism and war." on North Korea, but because it is terrible. One more of these Seth Rogen and James Franco stoner movies. But not like Pineapple Express or This Is The End, which were fun to watch, but more like their retarded, annoying younger brother, who likes poo jokes and Katy Perry. The Lord Of The Rings Jokes are pretty much the only positive thing about it and it is really hard to not just quit watching. I guess it must be fun to shoot such bullshit otherwise I don't get why you would do it. Congrats to Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen: You are the new Adam Sandler.
