Who Will Love My Children? (1983)
You can't beat this movie for a good cry
I blubbered like a little girl during the ending of this movie and I dare anyone else to hold it together without a sob. Absolutely heart-wrenching stuff, yet uplifting at it's core.
A great effort on the part of Ann Margaret who plays a terminally ill mother of ten who, knowing her arthritic steel-working husband won't be able to support the family when she is gone, arranges the adoptions of her children before she shuffles off. The role really deserved an Oscar.
You truly feel for this poor family as the dying mother gives her all to ensure that her kids don't end up in a poorly administered state orphanage system.
If you haven't seen it - get it if you can.
Team America: World Police (2004)
A truly great puppet movie
Coming from a Thunderbird loving background, I was primed to enjoy this movie. I was interested in how far Matt and Trey would bend the art of marionation(?) to achieve their artistic goals.
I must say that I wasn't disappointed. Team America turned out to be an absolute cracker.
The marionettes looked top-class and the effort put into the sets paid off. The send-up of another (unnamed) 'world police' and their bludgeoning techniques was sharp enough to sting yet tasteful enough not to offend (much).
I enjoy simple humour such as this. 'The signal' left me on the floor in stitches. Special effects were delightful - gore levels were just about right.
Team America could have done with a few less profanities but I wouldn't be too bothered. If you are familiar with Matt and Trey's South Park movie then you know what to expect.
Well done, guys!
The Haunted Mansion (2003)
The Haunted Mansion = The Sleepy Viewer
I don't know if it was due to lack of sleep but both my darling wife and I could barely keep ourselves awake through this.
It just seemed to drag on without really going anywhere and by the time the importance of Eddie's wife was highlighted, we looked at each other thinking "Is that all?" and promptly switched off.
The kids were annoying and Eddie's character was dull. We were waiting to be either scared or amused but it simply never came.
I am guilty of not sitting through the whole movie - I promise if it comes to TV I may watch the second half... if I happen to be tied to an armchair in front of the box with eyelid retractors in place.
