Mamitas (2011)
Mamitas
I thought Mamitas was a really well acted and naturalistic film. I found myself being able to relate to all of the characters, and felt like I knew them personally even though I grew up in a much different environment. It was like someone just dropped a camera into the middle of their everyday lives in LA including the drama, romance, and pressures of being in high school and made a movie out of it.
Mamitas is truly a coming of age story that features wonderful dialogue and two honest, realistic performances from its young cast. The story is nothing particularly new, but the movie is honest and real. Very entertaining movie that does a great job making a possibly cliché story-line unique and original in its own way.
American Animal (2011)
American Animal
AA was definitely an experience... One of the most unique art films I've seen. At times it reminded a lot of American Psycho and Requiem for a Dream. Some parts seemed a little over the top and melodramatic but overall I thought it was a very interesting and well done film. It was also interesting to make the connections with the various movie nods within the film itself (for example: Gangs of New York).
Whenever I consider writing a screenplay I always want it to center around a main character whose mental health is questionable but he can't be called outright crazy, I think that the writer/director/star Matt D'elia did a superb job of it in the film and it made for a very entertaining and layered story that seemed somewhat one dimensional at first.
The Odds (2011)
The Odds
Tyler Johnston's character deals with the suicide of his friend Barry (Calum Worthy) in the first act, but refuses to believe it; and instead comes to the conclusion he must have won big from the wrong people. Luckily, the chemistry with these characters carries you through the rest of the movie superbly, as it casts notable actors with up-and-coming talent. The action sequences and dialogue are enough to keep you intrigued throughout the movie. The great thing about it is once you get attached to a character, or think you have them figured out; you turn out to be completely wrong, which is something I love in a film. Definitely worth taking a chance on.
