Diana (2021)
Don't be a lemming of pretentious bad reviews. Lighten up & see this!
Cheesy Fun! With tender moments.
I don't really care for much of the broadway cookie cutter crap. You know the same annoying screeching broadway voices. Here, Jeanna de Waal playing Diana is pleasing to the ears. I detected a familiar Hellen Ready (I am Woman) quality.
This musical is confusing people because It's a hybrid. Not standard serious nor is it quite Rocky Horror Picture Show. It's in the middle. That is bothering reviewers who are derided its necessity to be one or the other.
Enjoy the ride and see it as the best of both worlds. Some of the numbers have the campy fun of Rocky Horror and yet it has poignant moments that are sad and full of tenderness.
Just like Dianna herself!
I think she would have loved it.
Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (2020)
The Trailer is Great. The Film is Not
Where was the musical story of Ma Rainey? Don't look here. After a brief exciting open to this film you are ready to be taken on this journey to discover this legendary title woman and her music. Yet, the journey ends or really never begins.
Talent can save this misleading title and trailer. It's a shame. It could have been an enlightening, entertaining joy ride!
Gilmore Girls: Take the Deviled Eggs... (2002)
Jealousy ~ Green is the new Pink
Green with envy, Lorelai has to make Sherry wrong.
Despite the fact that Sherry is sincere and genuine and full of good will, Lorelai disparages Sherry to Rory (trying for confirmation bias) then messing up her organized bathroom to boot. This childish behavior flaw is disappointing to her otherwise self aware, deprecating humorous character. While it may serve to make her more human it's nevertheless unpleasant in someone whom is beloved otherwise.
Hillbilly Elegy (2020)
Obvious Oscar Bait. Plays Like a Bad After School Special..
The Royals vs. The Hillbillies. It will be interesting at the Oscars to see The Hillbilly Elegy and The Crown face off for this year together.
Hillbilly Elegy missed the mark here. While this is a familiar theme in a new setting; trying to escape bad circumstances and poverty to a new life, Hillbilly Elegy has not benefited from those previous success stories.
You can root for characters who are in over their head due to circumstances beyond their power, but it's more difficult to when the willful lack of self awareness is this disturbing.
Reducing the protagonist epiphany of insight to a cliche montage with a banal voice over you have just striped away the character's arch and left the audience simply watching a bad PSA and After School Special.
The Florida Project (2017)
If you are watching and hoping it will get better...It DOESN'T
I wanted to like it. ....and you watch and keep hoping it will make a point. It's a pointless waste of time to keep hoping! You got to care for someone, but you don't because it has no heart.
Roma (2018)
Dog Crap!
Pure Dog Crap!
No matter how many overused dolly shots, it's still Dog Crap!
Obvious marketing attempt to create a path as Oscar material.
The only way this film could be considered Oscar material, is if the Dog's name was changed to Oscar.
Viewer beware where you step!
Mercy Street (2016)
Awful ~ Gratuitous Gore and Sex v.s. Quality. | Made on the Cheap!
I was really looking forward to this. Quality always from PBS. What happened? Was it filmed on the cheap? The shots are so tight as to not have any expensive establishing shots that might show what a small set they are working on. It shows! It looks like what it is cheap! Not even some green screen shots to make for some very interesting historical setting that could have been interesting. Did they cost too much?
The lead actress is not up to par, her character drives the story and she can't.
So instead of the quality of a Downtown Abbey, we trade on it's reputation and we get a poor quality PBS product trying to make up for it's obvious lack of quality with gratuitous gore and now a simulated oral sex scene?
Sorry I'm out!
The Pawnbroker (1964)
Ugly, Ugly and Ugly but also.....DEPRESSING
If you truly want to see something awful, ugly and be depressed in the end....Watch this!
The subject matter could have made an interesting film, yet the characters, the setting, the music all contribute to nothing but wallowing in squalor!
The plot has already been described here. Missing was the contrasting element to these pathetic characters and their equally dreary existence. It was all one tone. You wait for it to get better but alas, it never does. A bit of humor would have added an element of relief to an otherwise pitifully self-indulgent seediness.
I like gritty as much as anyone, but when you see this, you will want to watch something like.....The Exorcist, just to get the taste of this one out of your mouth.
Not all of us see a classic here, to some of us the emperor is naked! (and it isn't pretty!)
The Out of Towners (1970)
Hate New York? ~ You will Love This!
It looks like there are mainly a couple of reasons why people Hate this movie.
1.) They love their New York and feel protective of it. (N.Y. is one of the main characters, and I don't think the film would be used for the visitors bureau)
2.) If you are an easygoing type, who enjoys chilling with others who can go-with-the-flow.... You won't like the these people ~ The "Kellerman's" Their attitudes and the very sound of their voices will grate on your nerves.
However, If you can empathize with frustration, and even see this as a cautionary tale of "There but for the grace of God go I" It may be something of great value!
So hate or love it ~ It's obvious after watching this film, when things go wrong, we could all learn how to better RELAX......
Symphony of Six Million (1932)
So bad, it's good!
If you want to see an "Old Movie" in the way a SNL parody might really look and sound, This is the one!
Robert Osborne said that Irene Dunne was know for her early weepies. Well this one has to be the ultimate example.
It is hard to take your eyes off the screen because you can't believe how far it will go into pure maudlin, schmaltz yet oh so seriously!
Just to see these actors perform these lines and scenes without laughing is truly worth it.
I found it a brilliant example of the quintessential classic over-the-top tearjerker.
