Profanity does not equal Funny
18 July 2023
Sadly, Chris Rock is no longer funny. I didn't mind him in the 90s while he was on SNL and in a bunch of movies, but Chris Rock has become irrelevant.

After watching Selective Outrage, I'm convinced that Will Smith slapping him across the face gave him a minor career resurgence and he cashed in on it.

There were bits of the special that were funny, but it was mostly dull. I struggled to get through it. For some reason Rock still thinks profanity is funny, when it's not. If might be funny if the story or joke he was telling was funny, but sadly none of them were.

Pass on this. You couldn't pay me enough to watch it again. This dude is completely irrelevant in 2023

Chris Rock = Chris Pebble.

If you haven't watched the original, then don't before watching this.
20 May 2023
The original was more raw and a decent representation of the times.

The new version is also good representation of the times, but feels less raw and has Hollywood polish all over it. It's hilarious that this qualifies as an rated R movie when it seems more like a PG or G rated movie.

There were some laughs and the story was okay, but don't expect too many similarities or a connection to the original. The only thing that was similar was that there was a black and white guy that randomly team up to enter a 2 on 2 basketball tournament. Everything else was pretty different.

I wish Disney/Fox would stop remaking classics to make a quick buck off of fans. It's disappointing because they're ruining the memories people have of the original versions.

If you have nothing better to watch then it's a decent time filler, but don't dedicate your time to watching it.

I don't think it's a 1/10 rating, but it's certainly not above a 6/10 rating. I'd put it around a 3 or 4 out of 10 rating. The characters were likeable, so I went with 4.

Elvis (2022)

Great film with a few issues
4 July 2022
This styling of this film is very much like a Baz Luhrmann film. It felt familiar and almost like The Great Gatsby. I didn't have an issue with it, but for a biopic it almost felt a bit like a fictional movie. This movie was also a bit long. There were parts that dragged on. I feel like they could have cut about 15-20 minutes from it. Just my opinion though.

This is a good film overall and Baz does a great job of telling Elvis' life story, but when making an biopic the director should strive for accuracy. It was great listening to some of Elvis' classics throughout the film, but I didn't really care to listen to some of the modern music that was added to scenes. This is likely subjective because I'm sure there are people that did enjoy it. I just didn't care for it. It's a movie about Elvis. I'd prefer to listen to his music or the music that influenced him. Not something new.

Another issue I had with the film was Tom Hanks' makeup. All I saw was Tom Hanks in a fat suit the entire film, not the character he played. It just seemed like they put him in a fat suit and applied a bit of makeup. After watching Colin Farrell suit up as the Penguin in The Batman, I was disappointed by Hanks' makeup. For those that haven't watched the The Batman, Farrell is completely unrecognizable in The Batman. His appearance and voice are not familiar at all, that's how good the makeup was. I kind wish Baz and the makeup crew would have done something similar.

Austin Butler did an excellent job playing Elvis, no criticism here. He had the moves and styling of Elvis down.

If you're expecting this film to be like "Walk The Line", then you'll be disappointed. This is a dramatized biopic of Elvis.

Son of a Critch (2022– )

The Canadian version of The Wonder Years
4 February 2022
I'm on the first episode of Son of a Critch and right away I got The Wonder Years vibes. The show is being told through Mark's (the son) perspective, but he's a nerdier version of Kevin Arnold. The show feels very similar but with a Canadian spin on it.

I can see Ritchie being the Paul Pfeiffer and Fox as the Winnie Cooper (possibly even Becky Slater?) of the show. Tina might even be the Winnie Cooper of the show.

The narrator is even an older version of Mark, very similar to how Daniel Stern played the older version of Kevin Arnold doing the narration in The Wonder Years.

The one thing I like is that they added a Filipino kid to the show. Being an east Indian person, I remember dealing with similar types of BS from some of the kids in my school that didn't understand our cultural differences. Ritchie deals with similar types of BS and all he wants to do is fit in. That's something that's actually missing from The Wonder Years.

So far the how is pretty good, so I hope it develops into something like The Wonder Years or even funnier. I love that they went with the 80s for the time period, since I grew up in Canada during the 80s and 90s. I also grew up watching The Wonder Years back then, so Son of a Critch gives me that nostalgic feeling.

Netflix's all-female version of John Wick
16 July 2021
This movie has a great cast of actresses, but the story is so poorly written. Needs better character development and fight choreography. The slow motion fight scenes really exposed how badly the fight choreography was. It was almost like watching an episode of Arrow.

I'm all for inclusion and diversity in TV and film, but I'm getting sick of men being painted as the villains in movies where women are the heroines. If studios want to get it right, they need to make things seamless and less forced.

Just to be clear, I'm okay with the women being the good guys, but the villains could have been a mix of men and women but they weren't.

The story is incoherent and sloppy and you feel absolutely no attachment to most of the characters. It's really a shame too, because I've always enjoyed watching Karen Gillan, Lena Headey, Michelle Yeoh, Carla Gugino, and Angela Bassett in other movies and TV shows. Netflix had an embarrassment of riches to work with, but failed to put together a good movie.

Oh... and I'm a big fan of Paul Giamatti and his talents were completely wasted in this.

Going forward, Netflix should take more time to properly develop their projects so they avoid releasing more stinkers.

Master of None (2015–2021)
6/10
Season one and two were great, but season three was a completely different show and it wasn't good.
31 May 2021
I loved seasons one and two of Master of None, and noticed season three was recently released on Netflix.

I was expecting more of the same of what we watched in the first two seasons, but what we got was a completely different show that focused on Denise and her wife Alicia.

Season three has turned into a slow paced drama with absolutely no comedy, and it tells the story of Denise and Alicia's relationship. Dev does make an appearance in the episodes, but they're very minor and it's clear the show's focus is now on Denise and Alicia.

It's not a bad show if you like watching dramas like seasons three is set out to be, but I feel the first two seasons set expectations of what the show is, and now all of a sudden I'm watching a completely different show.

As far as I'm concerned, season three is a completely different show and it shouldn't be called Master of None. They should have dropped the name and just called it Moments in Love, since it's more of a spin-off.

The first two seasons were great and it's something I know I'd be able re-watch and enjoy again, but I'd skip season three.

Hopefully the show does a course correction and goes back to what worked in seasons one and two.

Mean Girls (2004)

Much better then I expected
16 April 2004
This movie was a lot better then I was expecting. I thought it would be a typical teen flick... usually dull, but when I saw Lorne Michaels name pop up during the opening credits then I thought it couldn't be that bad.... especially since a few members of the SNL cast were in this movie. The movie totally relates to the life of a typical teenager. The back-stabbing, the lies, the envy, the glamour... it had it all. This was a decent movie to see, and definitely worth paying for. Lindsay Lohan's character reminds us of how it feels to be the new kid in school, and what it takes to fit in. Tina Fey did a terrific job writing this movie since it was her first, and hopefully she continues to write scripts.

All in all, Lindsay Lohan's character is lovable and I'm sure many girls can relate to some of the characters in this movies.
