Kaguya-hime no monogatari (2013)
Great use of art!
I really enjoyed watching this movie. The colour and detail in the sketches. Specific detail was added where the viewers eye was meant to go. (though I did quite enjoy laughing at the several tiny babies that were left partially drawn)
It is quite refreshing to notice the attention paid to the sketches that went over the changes of the seasons. The detail with the insects, plants, flowers and animals.
Another aspect that really brings quite an effect into the story would be the colour scheme; colourful, ocher/grey, red. The drawings alone are impressive but the additional colour REALLY brings out the emotion behind the ongoing story.
I found the story rather strange because certain parts were confusing. I think this is one film I shall keep in my list to see again.
Death Becomes Her (1992)
Weirdly good
This has to be the weirdest movie I have ever laid my orbs of vision upon. I saw it as a kid one fine afternoon when I put on the telly to watch the Brady bunch because they had repeats of those back when I was younger. I have seen this movie many times after. I have seen it in parts, I have seen it whole.
The first time I watched it I was so scared and for some reason I was convinced it was totally normal. It scarred me to some extent. However, I never did change the channel when I found it on again because it was just so weird. I still sort of like this movie. It is just so bizarre. I highly doubt anything is as weird and utterly 90s as this movie.
This Boy's Life (1993)
It was good but could have been better?
I read the book so many times. Even knew there was a movie about it I had read and re read the book. I loved Tobias Wolff's writing. I think a major reason I didn't like it was because the book had so much to offer. It felt as though there wasn't enough depth in the movie. The movie was good no doubt. I am not a fan of Leonardo Di caprio. However, he did do a good job in this movie. I could think of no one better who could play the role of father as well as Robert De Niro did... Overall it was good and I wouldn't mind watching it again. Though I would prefer reading it again a lot more. Which is a lot for me to say because I do prefer movies a lot more than books. (sorry)
Hotarubi no mori e (2011)
I liked this movie it was refreshing.
Before watching this I didn't know what to expect especially since it is such a short anime film. What I really liked about it was the story in general, the sound effects, the sketches and the voice actors. The whole idea was nothing I would imagine and the ending was nothing I had expected. I liked how all the spirits in the forest looked out for him and how he grew up alone in the forest. It was as though he was raised by wolves without the wolf part of course (haha) unless you include that one spirit. The whole time I expected a cliché happy ending. I assumed they would find the mountain god who gave him the powers and then they would give her some as well. That didn't seem all that unlikely seeing as they didn't introduce the family too well. I assume it was because they didn't want us to get attached to something that would be left behind.
The main point in the whole movie was companionship, how no one wants to be lonely. In the end he appreciated her so much that he didn't mind being obliterated if only he could hug her. The ending was absolutely touching and even though I rarely cry when watching films this made me tear up.
