A Bucket of Blood (1959)
The ultimate art-house spoof
If anyone is fed up with the pretentious nitwits that dictate what is good art, chances are you'll enjoy this classic campy tale. The protagonist is a weakling who works as a waiter at a beatnik coffee shop and hangs around psuedo artist snobs, sucking up their every last syllable as if it is a mocha frapuccino. He wants very much to carve a niche for himself in this group of losers and manages to do so when he makes a sculpture out of his landlady's dead cat! True to herd mentality, everyone is soon basking in this guy's coolness, singing his praises, and generally kissing his talentless behind. Only problem is, he keeps making sculptures from bodies! By the time these Bohemians catch on to the fact that this guy may not be so hip after all, the death toll has risen and laughter is abound. Also make sure to look out for the fat bearded character Maxwell, this guy is a total riot. The sad thing is every time I go to an open mike I meet some "poet" who is just like him. Great sardonic humor from the master of the macabre Roger Corman. 8/10
The Brady Bunch Movie (1995)
GROOOOVY
This is a really great example of how to adapt a hit television series into a movie. The Bradys are now living in the 90s, but the catch is that they are exactly the same as they were in the 70s. The same great Brady jokes, Brady clothes, and Brady fun. The thing for all male viewers to remember when watching this movie is that ITS ALL ABOUT CHRISTINE TAYLOR. Christine Taylor makes a delicious Marsha. There's a great line in this movie that shes "harder to get into than a Pearl Jam concert" but she could sure fool you in those short skirts and go-go boots. If after watching Christine Taylor prance around in this movie you don't feel the need to go erm....you know....you must be a eunuch or something. Some other fun things to look for in this movie are Ru Paul as a guidance counselor (freaking hilarious) and a grunge rock remdition of "Thank You Girl". Loads of fun. 8/10
Satanis: The Devil's Mass (1970)
The real deal
For those of us who were turned on to Satanism after LaVey's death and never got a chance to see the infamous "black house" (now demolished) this is as close to it and its magic that we're going to get. The ritual sequences in this film are fantastic, the occasional infared camera work really adds to the diabolical mood. LaVey presents himself in this film as a sensitive soft spoken gentleman with a great sense of humor and a philosopher's mind, much to the dismay of many an armchair Christian. By contrast, the Christians interviewed in this film are stark, boring and dull. LaVey's flock are equally charming in this film and appear as a group of fun loving freaks who, with their arcane sense of individuality, have formed an elite think tank to be reckoned with. Each of them are truly a star in Crowley's sense of the word, as each of their colorful personalities demonstrate, (the adorable elderly woman reminds me of my grandmother). For those who want an introduction to Satanism this was/is the real deal. Shemhamforash! I give it a 9/10.
Sleepy Hollow (1999)
Tim Burton's darkest gem
While some who are just getting to know Tim Burton through his beautiful sentimental epic Big Fish will be shocked, this will always be a core favorite for true fans of everything Burtonesque. In what I consider to be his darkest film ever, Burton delves deep into his lifelong obsession with everything gothic. In short, Sleepy Hollow is a salute to the Vincent Price and Hammer Horror films Burton viewed growing up (Good ol' Chris Lee gets a nod in his brief roll as the burgomaster). It is Burton's assertion that he can indeed make something on par with these classics. Sleepy Hollow for the most part lacks the humor of Burton's earlier ventures. Atmospherically, however, it is the pinnacle of what he always strives for with his work. The town itself has a brooding maniacal presence to it, steeped in shadow, that serves as constant reminder throughout the whole film that all is not right. The gore is delicious, with a tree full of decapitated heads and blood splashed artfully in the snow. Christopher Walken is terrifying as the human form of the horseman,Christian Ricci has never looked more beautiful, giving the likes of Barbara Steele and Ingrid Pitt a run for their money, and Johnny Depp, well he does his extraordinary Johnny Depp thing. This is great stuff. I give it a nine out of ten.
Gummo (1997)
A great American story...
This is an awesome and rarely told American story, the story of middle America and the plight of its inhabitants. Anyone looking for a backwoods expose will be very pleased. The characters that inhabit Xenia, Ohio are richly grotesque and the cinematography is first rate. Chloe Sevigny is a bombshell as usual and gives a great performance. The soundtrack largely comprised of black metal music is very appropriate and perhaps the most fitting to accompany the material within. Personally I found some of the sound quality to be rather poor and subsequently had a hard time understanding a good bit of the dialogue so I lowered my score to a seven. Recommended.
