La casa de papel (2017)
Best show I've seen in a long time
Shout-out and thank you to rapper Hopsin for getting me on this with his video" BE11A CIAO . " If you are a huge fan of heist tv and movies, this is MUST-SEE. Even if you're not, still watch it. Anyone hating on it simply lacks the capacity to fully understand how much research and development goes into a show like this. The writing and cast is second-to-none. 10/10.
Ava (2020)
What the F are other reviewers watching?!? Love it
If you DIDN'T expect a cliche then this wasn't made for you. Personally, I can't get enough assassin's-for-hire-turn-on-employer type of films. Before this, I thought Jessica was just decent. Afterwards??? I hope she keeps making action films because she kicked a$$ , ESPECIALLY when wearing red dress and heels! Colin, common, and especially John did a great job. I loved it, I hope they keep making films just like it. If you're tired of assassin-for-hire type films, don't bother. But if you're like me and can't get enough? It's exactly what you wanted.
Arizona (2018)
LOVED IT!
After the first 5 minutes, I smiled with a smirk on my face like the Grinch for the rest of the film. Danny McBride is his usual self and the cast is perfect. If you like Danny and the dark comedy he brings (or rather the entire cast, director, writers etc) then you'll love this. People seem to either rate it 8-10 stars or 1-3. Don't pay attention to the BS ratings. Give it a chance; if you like McBride and everything he's done, this will definitely be a hilarious trip for the real fans of Danny and the other cast members (Dee from always Sunny, Owen Wilson, David Allen Grier, Seth Rogen all have small roles but some of the best lines) and the rest of the film is all McBride & DeWitt
The Gentlemen (2019)
Instant Classic
This is easily one of my favorite films. The action, flashbacks, and possibilities of each scene kept me on my toes. The Visual Effects deserve an award. The cast is superb and the way Guy Ritchie utilized their talents and mixed the actors in different scenes allowed almost everyone to work together in one way or another on set. This helped to showcase the depth of the individual actors while creating a cinematic masterpiece for those who love crime films especially, but also for those who do not. The dry humor and wit add an entirely different element not usually associated with this type of crime genre. Any critic that bashed or had anything negative to say about this film needs to get into a different career. Don't listen to them; watch it for yourself or you're missing out on a classic film. I was actually sad when it ended because it was so amazing and refreshing. I can't say enough about it and I hope it will inspire other film companies, writers, directors, and actors to do something similar in the future because we need more movies with the storytelling and passion that this classic brought to the audience.
Rob the Mob (2014)
A Beautiful Dream
I didn't expect this to be one of those films that I didn't want to end. Despite the brilliant plan to take from those who took from the community, including your own family, studying and planning with (i.e. knowledge of the'No Guns,' code, inability to call the cops) and the 'brass' it took to pull off - the camera work, editing and production put it over the top. In what could have been a decent film, based on the story and script alone, which is incredibly well-written by Jonathan Fernandez, the character depth and the music/visuals - is what makes this film so captivating.
Besides the amazing performances of main characters Michael Pitt (one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood,) and Nina Arianda (as Tommy and Rosie Aka 'Bonnie and Clyde,') the film also looks through opposing views while developing supporting characters through great acting in the mob (by Andy Garcia aka Big Al) the Press (Ray Romano) and Feds. It is very impressive in providing great actors, through a brilliant casting job,all the way throughout.
I really can't say enough about the job of translating the writing director Raymond De Felitta did - especially in the final scene. The way he chose to show the outcome (the snow globe, glass, and music,) tied it all together, almost indescribably.
Despite the content and basic plot of this film, it dives much deeper, culminating into one single message thats repeatedly spoken, inferred, and felt : LOVE.
It is a beautifully unexpected message that the film gives to viewers and is deeply refreshing compared to many other films today, which rely on superficial looks at the cast and action rather than taking the time to develop the characters, use different viewpoints, and includes actual flashback footage into the real NYC of the early '90's to make us feel as if we're actually there with them.
Viewers will not be disappointed in the film, which deservedly received a 10/10 from me - for being less like something viewers are simply'watching,' - and more like you've also entered their beautiful "Dream."
Child 44 (2015)
A Different View of a Horrible Time in History - With Brilliant Performances, Intriguing Storyline, and Overall Amazing Film - That Deserves FAR More Credit
"Child 44" is a different kind of movie that takes place in the 1950's, (1930's in early flashbacks) & in USSR, among the communism & reign of The famous brutal Dictator, Stalin.
As Stalin says "There are no murderers in Paradise ," and in a communist society - if you even mention it - you die. Hardy, a high-ranking Russian officer is given a decision among claims that his wife is a traitor ( played by Noomi Rapace, who has been a personal favorite of mine since 2011's 'Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.')
It's different but I really loved it; it's a mystery and a period piece of a time when any mention against Stalin's beliefs or even accusation of being a traitor gets you killed. I really like this take on the 'other side' of Russia, which teaches the brutal history of the USSR & times.
This movie flew under the radar and had harsh reviews from so-called professional 'critics,' but it seems many movies they look down upon are ones that become my favorite. I was sick when I began watching this & didn't think I could watch much of anything that night. However, this film drew me in immediately; I was hooked for the entire time (a very nice surprise and a rarity.)
It's based on the 'top selling' book in 2008 that won numerous awards & rated much more favorably than this film. Yet, I can't figure out why. I know, despite the critics who gave it negative ratings, there's been many who've countered with positive reviews of their own. I decided the same but it's far from the only reason.
I TRULY enjoyed the performance of every actor in this film. While Hardy continues to stand out, Noomi Rapace is just as impressive (if not more,) as they take on this case of murdered children in an 'Us-vs-the-world' mentality. Gary Oldman also delivers a solid performance, as usual. Yet it really is the 'on-screen' relationship & energy between Hardy and Rapace that leaves a great, lasting impression.
If you're Tom Hardy fan - it's definitely worth seeing. Even if you're not - if you enjoy mystery, period movies, crime/drama, history, action etc. - you'll love 'Child 44.' For all of those reasons - as well as a great deal more (that would give away spoilers) - I gave it a 10.
