Heaven's Gate (1980)
A film that actually makes you believe you had been there.
The reality of this movie is in its detail. Cimino's attention to every aspect of framing and authenticity is such that after viewing this movie it will seem to take on the qualities of an old memory. Yes, it is long, but unlike so many others, I don't see that as a bad thing. Cimino gives the viewer their money's worth in so many ways and the length of this Masterpiece is no exception. Those who can't follow the story line probably didn't do well in coloring in preschool either. It is unfortunate that the only criticisms of this movie are based in a generation whose attention spans were trained by MTV and comic books. This is truly an experience that everyone should have the chance to enjoy. Thank you Mr. Cimino for the memories.
Game Day (1999)
Richard's best work. A wonderfully funny film that can be watched more than once.
Richard Lewis shows why he should be considered for many more parts than he has in the past. His range as an actor is confirmed by his performance in this wonderful look at college basketball. The game sequence is one of the best I've ever seen in a sports movie as far as realistic play is concerned....that from an ex-basketball player from Kansas. Despite the fantastic finish, the play of the game, the flow of it, is much more credible than any basketball film I've seen before but it is so much more still. As a commentary on cannabis, it is non judgmental and wonderfully objective. I just think that anyone with a good sense of humor should view this film and see Richard Lewis at his best. It opened my eyes to his talent and I have since been a big fan of his.
